Update Conexant Modem Driver Available

Linux Users,

The Conexant modem driver is now available on the Dell File Library download page. Click below to download this driver if needed. Thanks for your patience!

Thanks for making this driver available.

I installed as directed and the install seemed to complete without any issues.

When I try and connect with gnome-ppp the log shows 'WVDial V1.56 Cannot open /dev/modem: input/output error'. 'Detect' in gnome-ppp returns 'No modem was found on your system'

I am running Ubuntu 7.10 Kernel 2.6.22-14 on an Inspiron 6400 (T7400 Core 2 Duo), this has a Conexant HDA D110 MDC V.92 Modem. The modem is fine (I am connected now under Vista) so I am at a loss. Being a total novice in Linux I am at a loss as to where to go from here. Any help greatly appreciated!

I am using a Precision M6300, which works with the non-Dell hsfmodem version 7.68, but I think support for this hardware was fixed after version 7.60. I don't have Ubuntu, so I can't actually test Dell's software package. So, some problems may be related to specific types of hardware. Is there a chance that the Dell package will be updated to a newer version?

It's April 2008 and soon Ubuntu will release its latest version 8.04. And of course after a little while we hope and expect Dell to make available the latest hsf modem linux driver to use on ubuntu 8.04.

I cannot understand why some people who bought Dell PCs with Ubuntu preinstalled did not have a working hsf modem also preinstalled. My Dell laptop that came with vista and now triple booting Vista,XP and Ubuntu has the hsf modem that works flawlessly ever since 7.04,the first time Dell published the linux driver.

I even tried the lite version of PClinuxOS and installed the fedora driver provided by Dell under liveCD elsewhere on this website and it also worked without any problem.

Take note however that when I tried the Ubuntu PROVIDED BY DELL and tried to install it on my Dell laptop the installation did not finish and there was a message that my model is not supported.

I couldnt get any driver for my hsf modem to work on a fedora core 8 (actually I didnt try too hard to get it to work). I dont use ubuntu. Any way so it seemed that I was lucky, I got myself a dsl connection and the isp gave me a wireless router for free. Now not hsf modem, but I had to install drivers for the wireless card. I downloaded fedora core 9 alpha, installed it, and searched the internet for drivers installation for linux on vostro 1500. I found several posts that helped me install the drivers at last. SO now using internet on Linux for the first time in life :) ... Next step: installing drivers for the geforce 8400gs !! Problems facing right now: have to download, and configure correct linux kernel source code ( the one that matches fedora core 9 alpha ) ....

ahhh ... the joys of using linux :)

PS: as of this writing, I see a fedora core 9 beta available for download ...

That is the advantage AND disadvantage of linux.

If you decide to install Linux ON YOUR OWN instead of buying a pc preinstalled with linux then you will have to go thru the painful process of installing and configuring drivers.

To Cot_al,

There are a lot of websites/forum that should be able to deal with your problem....If you will just please provide details of your PC on this forum someone should be able to help you.

I do not believe that when you bought your PC with ubuntu, the modem driver was not provided to you or made available to you unless the modem itself was not provided at the time you bought your pc.

As for me, I bought my dell laptop with vista. I tried the linux conexant driver from Dell after installing Ubuntu and was LUCKY that it worked. Dell has no obligation to provide me the driver as I did not buy Ubuntu preinstalled on my dell. If it did not work for me then I could have abandoned Ubuntu or set it aside on a separate partition for use later....(I do have an old external modem that works on all OS)

As to conexant/lunuxant driver available for a fee read this -https://www.linuxant.com/store/faq.php

Remember Linux is NOT FREE...

Is this driver going to work with next release of Ubuntu (Hardy, 8.04)?

Thank you!

On Fedora 8, I installed the slmodem package from Livna RPMs, which supports Intel HDA modems, and it seems to work (I can talk to the modem with minicom, but I didn't actually test a modem connection yet). The only disadvantage is that sound is broken while the modem driver is active, but that may be true for the HSF driver as well.

After a lot of searching and trying I found something which seems to work just fine in  Ubuntu Hardy

I have not tested it but GnomePPP & KPPP does find the modem.

So hope the following will work for you if so post your comments.

The file I have found which made the difference is on linuxant

you will need this file

http://www.linuxant.com/alsa-driver/alsa-driver-linuxant_1.0.16.1-1_all.deb

It states

We provide a version of the alsa-driver package (from the ALSA project) with improved support for the HSF driver. This should be installed only if you have a HDA modem and the built-in ALSA HDA modules of the HSF driver either doesn't work or have a negative impact on your HDA sound device. It should be used with version 7.68.00.07 or later of the driver.

Before installing this package, make sure that you have the gcc and make packages installed. Additionally, the kernel headers are also needed, this is the linux-headers package in recent Debian and Ubuntu releases, kernel-devel in Fedora and Red Hat Enterprise Linux, kernel-source in Mandriva and SuSE

select reload

after which you reboot and install the Dell drivers

http://linux.dell.com/files/ubuntu/hardy/modem-drivers/hsf/hsfmodem_7.68.00.09oem_i386.deb

reload and reboot

In my case it did the trick

Good luck

What is "reload"?  Any way I am using LinuxMint 4 now which is gutsy based so the previous hsf driver still works. when I have the 5 version then I will try your suggestion....

I guess if you would have to install the drivers you would know...

At a ceretain stage it ask if you want to reload or not and you select reload.
