using i8kutils,sound on an ubuntu system

Question

I have an 8200 system with both WinXP and Ubuntu Linux (a derivative of Debian) on it. I can't for the life of me find out how to set up the dell buttons. I did apt-get install i8kutils, so I have the modules on my system, but I can't use them. I am also having a problem with sound on this device. I am using oss, but whenever the system boots, i always have to modprobe snd-mixer-oss and modprobe snd-pcm-oss. Can someone please help me? Should I be using alsa instead, or perhaps maestro. It's so difficult to find help for linux because there are so many distributions. Message Edited by spartas on 11-12-2004 05:30 PM
