Want to install ubuntu

I have a Dell Latitude D420 1G Ram , Windows XP. Like to install Ubuntu and run Dual Boot. 1. I prefer not to install GRUB to MBR . Need instructions to install it to Boot Sector of Active Partition 2. Failing above I would consider use Windows Boot loader - Need advice to do that. 3.I have boot Magic - Is this a good option as Boot Loader ? Boot Magic got me out of trouble in another laptop trying to run XP after deleting Linux. 4. I do not know whether Dell Latitude D 420 has a DSR (restore) partition . I can not find one in mine . ???Hidden . Tried Ctrl.+F11 on boot - But nothing happens. I am pretty sure that I did not do anything to mess with it. 5. Will Installation of Linux cause problems with Dell Utilities Sector (FAT) and it use whatever that may be , on the hard drive ? I can see this sector with Partition Magic Thank you for your advise to a Linux Newbie in Dell . msabey

Hello msabey!

What is wrong with having GRUB installed to the MBR? It works just fine!

If you want to install it to another location anyway, you will have to use the text-based installer of the Alternate-CD.

I almost forgot: if you install GRUB to another location than MBR, I think you will have to write a chainloader-entry into the Windows-bootloader pointing to the GRUB-location. But don't ask me how to do that...
