What display in kubuntu

I am dual booting a inspiron 1501 vista/kubuntu and I can not figure out what display I should set in the hardware options. Its working but I want to go to a higher res than 1024x768. Its set on plug and play now and wont let me set the res any higher.

After messen around with it for a while I figured out no matter what settings I used anything I tested it it would just black out. So I went a head and changed the display without testing it. I ended up setting it up as Dell 1501FP Digital Widescreen after a reboot it works great and I get the higher res I was looking for. So looks like I answered my own question after hacking around a while with it.

You've learned a valuable lesson, hopefully:
Just as in Windows, Linux (any version) requires device drivers, and most Linux distros do NOT always include the necessary PROPRIETARY drivers.

Kubuntu or Ubuntu, both based on Debian, do have fairly good device-driver support, which makes them much easier to set up than most other Linux distros.  The Dell drivers included on the Ubuntu install disks include most Dell flat-panels (including Dell laptop displays), but don't always have the same names (as in "2007WFP" (Dell's appelation for its 20" Wide Digital display) is called "2005WFP" on the Ubuntu installation disk.

If you purchased your Dell with Ubuntu pre-installed, the necessary proprietary device drivers should be included on the Ubuntu DVDs or CDs. (These are NOT included on the downloaded version of Ubuntu, however).

NOTE, however, that the drivers included with your Dell don't always include the best versions.   I would search for Proprietary drivers immediately, and replace the drivers included with your Dell.

All bets are off IF you have devices which were NOT purchased along with your Dell.
