Which machine for Linux use?
Hi,
Currently I run a Dell Inspiron 8600 with a 32mb Nvidia Go5200 card and 512mb of memory. Decent machine; I specifically spec'ed it out about 2 years ago.
Now due to events in my company (needing laptops for training purposes) I've been asked to go get a new laptop.
So I started to spec out a new laptop based on the following:
1) Needing to run a copy of Windows Vista
2) Need to run Linux as a dual boot.
So my choices were either: 1) 64-bit processor
2) Duo Core processors
Since Dell doesn't carry 64-bit in a laptop currently, I decided Duo Core was more feasible.
However, one of the requirements to run Linux is that I need a Nvidia Graphics card. ATI cards are generally not supported in Linux well, so I didn't want an ATI card.
Well, I've been looking, and Dell doesn't carry Duo Core with Nvidia cards; only with ATI cards (Radeon X1400 to be exact).
Does anyone know of a Dell model that carries Duo Core with a Nvidia card, or does anyone know what needs to be done to get the X1400 working in Linux?
Otherwise I may have to go find another vendor to get this thing.

The ati cards are working on linux. I am an awner of ati card and it is ok to use it on my suse linux distribution. The difference it is tha nvidia driver are more easy to install than ati driver but ati do a lot of work and know, it is more easy. An other difference is that nvidia driver are more powerfull than ati, but if you don't play game and don't whant 3d acceleration, with the driver include in the distribution, it is ok, you don't have to install ati proprietar driver.
so:
if you don't need 3d acceleration, it is ok with ati card and you don't have to do anythink to have an ati card working well.
if you want to have 3d acceleration, you must tu install ati driver (you can find them to ati website) or dri driver (open driver). And know it is more easy ti install it then six month ago...

I guess I'm going to have to go for the Gateway instead...not my favorite vendor, but I can get what I'm looking for.
Sorry Dell...
