Check out this link. It looks like you can go windowless. http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=04&kc=6W300&l=en&oc=blcwfn3&s=bsd

Yes, I too would like to order a Dell M90 Precision Notebook without any software installed. I would insist on installing and configuring Linux/Solaris (both Open Source) myself, exactly the way I prefer it. The CAD/CAM software I use runs best on either Linux or Solaris. Not WinXP, and certainly not Vista, as it was only recently ported to XP, with mediocre performance.

And I don't see why I should then pay for 3 years technical/software support## when I am highly unlikely to use it. So I would expect those costs (substantial I presume) to be deducted. All I would need, and am willing to pay for, is 12 months hardware warranty. I fully intend to upgrade to the next model, or better product (Dell, or other brand) within 12 months anyway.

## Dell Sales were unresponsive about this.

Note: Australian Dell is a rip-off! Same optioned model costs $1,300 less when ordered from the States, including currency conversions, Goods and Services Tax, and customs.

And what about OTHER notebooks? I need a budget model - C500T (Customizable C502US) and there is no possibility when "constructing" the product to disable Windows solutions. Only I can take WinXP or WinVista and that's very petty.

Satyr37, off-topic question:
What CAD software are you using? The only Windows software I miss is AutoCad, which I now use on the university machines running XP.

dotancohen, Obviously not an answer to what Satyr37 is using -- but here is a link that might help you nonetheless: http://www.tech-edv.co.at/lunix/CADlinks.html

I'll add my Dittos here for Linux or NO OS on the M90 or its upcoming successor. I posted the same as an idea on IdeaStorm.

I work in unix and linux all day at work and home for graphics and programing. I need the nvidia quadro graphics. So, a dual boot M90 with Solaris 10 and Linux (and maybe XP Pro under VMware) would be ideal.
