17 R2 LAN adapter suddenly missing
I mainly use wireless. Every so often I need to use Ethernet. The LAN adapter is no longer showing in the network adapters window, in win 7. It also is missing from the device manager. Scan for new hardware does not find it. I ran the installer for the driver. It says it cannot find supported hardware. What the heck is going on....Did the LAN adapter die....? Recommendations...?

Hi,
What do you show under Network Adapters in Device Manager? When you connect the Ethernet cable, do you receive any sort of message?

Connecting a Ethernet cable does nothing. FYI... The port has an orange light.
Listed under the device manager:
Bluetooth device(personal area network)
Bluetooth device(rfcomm protocol tdi)
Intel(R) dual band wireless AC 7260
Microsoft virtual wifi miniport adapter
Microsoft virtual wifi miniport adapter #2
The Bluetooth devices have always been there...I don't know what they are.
The Ethernet used to be listed as Killer LAN.

I will try the BIOS update. I have already removed everything involving Killer LAN. I tried reinstalling... says cannot find supported hardware, install aborts. I will post again after I update the BIOS.

Hi,
Try flashing the system BIOS to the latest version, you can download the BIOS from the Dell support site. After flashing the BIOS, check if it shows up again. Also, if you show any Killer software in the Programs and Features list, uninstall it, restart the system and try installing the Killer LAN driver again.

Sorry for the delay. I did the BIOS update. It was successful. No change to the Ethernet adapter. It does have a constant orange light, but is non existent in the network manager and in the device manager. Is it dead? I will buy a usb Ethernet adapter for now. Any suggestions?

Just to verify, you are talking about the on-board Ethernet adapter, right?
Try turning it off in BIOS, and then back on.
Should be listed in DeviceManager/Network-Adapters or maybe an unknown or device in error. Don't confuse it with wireless devices.
Has Windows7-64 been recently re-installed on this machine and proper ChipSet drivers didn't get re-installed?

We are talking about the on board ethernet adapter, not the wireless. I do know the difference. This windows installation has been on for a year and a half. I have already disabled, then enabled the LAN device in the BIOS. That did not have an effect. After the problem started, I did get the latest drivers for all, including ethernet. Everything installed fine except ethernet. The driver update failed. I Uninstalled the driver and tried again. The error was no compatible hardware found. In the device manager there are no unknown items, nor does the killer LAN device show up.

Good work.
You might want to open machine and see if Ethernet adapter if built into MB or if it is a daughter-board that might need to be re-seated. Service Manual might also shed some light on it.
Other than that, sounds like it's fried.
You can try USB adapter, but I'm not sure how much faster it will be than WiFi.

Thanks for your input. I have looked. It is embedded in the MB. To respond to your last point... this is my home pc and my work pc. At home i use wireless and at my own office. But when I go out to client offices they don't always have wireless. I used the Ethernet adapter for that, not for increased speed. Yes I will be picking up a USB dongle for Ethernet.
