Advice on upgrading my 2011 Alienware :)
Well, I have an older Alienware, not sure what model is that, probably Area-51, which I bought in January 2011.
Quite a lot of time passed since then. However, now it's time for upgrade, since quite a few smaller, but annoying problems occurred, and well... it's time. Besides in near year I want to buy 1080 GTX + some virtual reality stuff, so .. :)
I have 2.8 Mhz processor, which is about 14% overclocked, memory, 12 GB (8GB usable, some of sticks are bad I guess, however I can't figure out which since by inserting 1 by 1 all of them work).
Obviously though the years I changed a video card a couple of times, bought SSD + another HDD, etc. Now, however, I am in frustration. What is the best option to you:
1) Keep the case (enclosure), it works, I still like it, no problem here. In this case I would need a new motherboard, memory + CPU + I would 100% buy a new power supply. In this case, how do I find out which motherboard to buy? How do I know if motherboard is compatible with case, any possible problem while exchanging MB?
2) Get a new case + MB, CPU, Memory and power? In this case I might have a luck of selling the case + MB + CPU and memory together maybe?
What's ur advice? Thank you./

You would be better off selling the "working" system and buying a whole new system or a build kit from NewEgg.

Thanks. Didn't see kits there that included only case, MB, CPU, POWER and memory.
Well, time to dig in and find out, I guess.

For those who wish to retain their enviable cases & rebuild from the inside out when necessary, I've collected valuable swap information together in these posts, some include Z170 / X99, where those Haswell-E | SkyLake owners will be Broadwell-E | KabyLake future-proofed:
Praise for Area-51 R1's unrivaled build qwality & aesthetics: "... the Alienware is just so lovely and well built ... It's an amazing feat of engineering ... many people out there just don't understand how much engineering goes into these cases nor the complexity ... Honestly it's amazing. The build quality is just staggering. I don't know how many of you guys have ever tried to lift a Dell Poweredge server but trust me when I say this thing is built every bit as good as one of those". This person fully appreciates the Masterpiece it still is ... u can find his buildlog & ones just like it among those links I left up there
Now as for NYC & AAA
I won't spend anymore time on someone who doesn't even know what kind of Alien they have. As for @AAA --> you're aware this is now my edited post, well aware I qwoted your 2011 post which related to your Aurora, where u said this: Actually the case will upgrade nicely for years so I will most likely just rebuild from the inside out when necessary
To which I 1st said: Here we have an owner with a much much nicer case than Aurora; odd, Sir, you'd so easiiy give up on it for him ... ... ... as opposed to rebuilding from the inside out, now that it's necessary ... ... ...
Like a Bird of Prey, I see your new remarks down there from up here on high. I happen to live near Washington DC & we've been blessed with Eaglet Twins, streamed live since the moment they hatched on http://dceaglecam.org/ until the day they fledge their nest soon
On a day like today when Mom & Pop arrive with another katfish for supper, Sir, I choose not to pluck your few statements apart as if they were a dead fish & feed my thoughts on what are your thoughts to the Area-51 Owner's Community like so much gizzards & entrails ...
though I suppose there are those out there with a hungry ravenous look in there ii's
wishing I would
I'm a hold it all down with one klaw & eat this one for me self
I do find an Aurora owner who hands out 'upgrade' advice to an A-51 owner by qwickly showing the exit sign, the exit stage left? ... charming ... I'll call it. A good day to you both.
Happy swimming ...

That post was five years ago. At some point upgrades are no longer feasible especially when the gentleman wants to replace the MB.
I have upgraded my system twice nicely but still have the same MB. If I were to upgrade it I wouldn't use my old Alienware case when you can get a nicely featured one rather cheap.
My next upgrade will be a completely new system and hopefully a build of my own.

Thanks, yes, I've decided not to deal with older cases, but to build a brand new one from scratch.
