Alienware 13

Intel i5 @ 1.7 GHz to 2.7 GHz

You have a 1.7GHZ dual core CPU...Borderlands 2 recommends using 2.4GHZ quad core CPU

Your "old" ASUS laptop which had a 2.3GHZ quad core CPU meets this requirement a lot more so than your newer machine

Warframe runs really well because any dual core CPU is sufficient and that's what you have

your system was never designed to maximise the use of the GPU and CPU...it was designed to allow gamers to get a good mix of performance on the road when they are using the batteries.

you just need to choose your games carefully and ensure you meet the CPU requirements...i.e you don't want to play Assassins Creed on this.

So the shiny new GPU means nothing with the CPU holding it back?

your old laptop has a Core I7 3630QM which is a very powerful cpu.

your new core I5 is a low voltage 15w cpu, even tho it is newer

but it can not compare with the good "old" 3630QM

take a look at the picture below and you will see.

I have to agree with you, and only wish I had seen this before I purchased mine. I assumed, incorrectly, that the 13 would be great with the Amp, however the CPU is a big issue. It was made for tablets, not gaming PCs. I purchased my first AlienWare in 2006 and had recommended them for years. I upgraded the 2006 one with an AlienWare 17. As the vid card in it was getting older, I thought, I might as well upgrade. So, I purchased my wife a 13 and myself a 13. Mine is more powerful than hers, in fact has everything but the touch screen, yet the video driver crashes all the time, and CPU is pegged most of the time, of course, depending on the game.

Had the 13 been marketed differently, I would have gone with at least a 15.

I made the mistake of not looking into dual core vs quad , but at this moment I am happy with my purchase since it runs games well and is very mobile. My brother also has this laptop and it has caused him nothing but trouble , with crashing GPU, blue screens and other misc. problems. I would like to ask if you if the amp helps at all with running games at higher settings?

I didn't get the AMP, not yet. Couldn't see forking out that much cash as the 13 I have has a 960M in it, so to make a big difference I would need a Titan or something, and that is too much to spend on it, at least right now.

If the crashes are related to the video driver crashing and recovering, I upgraded to the 350.12 nVidia drivers and I performed the below, and it helped the crashes, don't have them as often as I did. I run Witcher 3 at higher than the recommended settings from GeForce Experience and it does fine, 20-30FPS.

Method 1:

a. Press the ‘Windows + R’ key on the keyboard.

b. In the ‘Run’ windows type regedit and hit enter.

c. Browse to and then click the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Control\GraphicsDrivers

d. On the Edit menu, click new, and then select the following registry value from the drop-down menu specific to your version of Windows (32 bit, or 64 bit):

For 32 bit Windows:

a. Select DWORD (32-bit) value.

b. Type TdrDelay as the Name and click Enter.

c. Double-click TdrDelay and add 8 for the Value data and click OK.

For 64 bit Windows:

a. Select QWORD (64-bit) value.

b. Type TdrDelay as the Name and click Enter.

c .Double-click TdrDelay and add 8 for the Value data and click OK.

e. Close the registry editor and then restart your computer for the changes to take effect.
