I've got an R13 R2 with the Intel 520 and Nvidia 960M graphics and came across this issue today (although the OP has a Windows XP/7 shade of blue showing in the pic above, not a black screen).  The issue started when Windows Update decided to apply a new Intel display/audio driver.  Using a second display via the HDMI connection, I was able to successfully login, set the display to mirror the main display, uninstall the driver via Device Manager (display came back immediately at that point), and  then downloaded Microsoft's Show or Hide Updates Troubleshooter (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/3073930/how-to-temporarily-prevent-a-driver-update-from-reinstalling-in-windows… ) and then used the Dell Support site to download the Dell certified Intel display driver for my laptop.  I ran the troubleshooter, hid the Intel display driver update in the list, and then installed the older Dell Intel display driver.  The installation did caution me that newer drivers were there.  I told it to install anyway and then was prompted to reboot at the end.  Have not had an issue since, yet we all now have to live in fear of the next Intel display update that Microsoft decides to push out.

Hope that helps.

BTW - I use this for gaming when I travel for work.  I hadn't turned it on since the end of February until today because I'm traveling again soon and wanted to update.  Glad I had some time on my hands.  I wish the old Windows Update option to not install driver updates was still present in Windows 10...

The option is (kind of) still there in version 1607 of Windows 10, but the description is misleading compared to title of the article you linked to.  In Windows 10, the text description states "manufacturers' apps and custom icons" for your devices.  It makes no specific mention of drivers.  I do have a Windows 7 PC to compare and in the same location the text reads "driver software" and "detailed information" about your devices.  I can't confirm that this still retains the same function in Windows 10.  If it did, why would Microsoft create and release the "show/hide update" troubleshooter?

All but the most recent hardware seems to have stabilized in terms of drivers under Windows 10, so feel free to experiment with it.  Just realize that it could be months before you find out if this option works like it did in previous versions of Windows.  Then again, with Microsoft releasing additional bloat to Windows 10 in the near future, anything is possible.
