I'm in exactly the same situation as you Charl. So close to buying the M14x but for that much money, I don't want it to be out of date within a couple of months. As far as I can tell, and trust me I've searched multiple forums, laptop insider websites, laptop gaming websites and spoken to different people at Dell and it doesn't look as though there will be a redesign out. There will be a new processor out in summer next year, called HASWELL. The main revision of this is to extend the battery life. Not a big enough deal to make me wait another 7/8 months.
In respect to the size and design, they won't get too much smaller or lighter as they'll keep the optical drive. So in my eyes, I think buying now is a safe bet.
Hope this has helped with your choice...trust me, I've spent enough time researchign EVERY aspect of the M14x R2 and compared it to every single laptop of similar or the best spec laptops I can find. It's the hands down winner!
Let me know if you do buy it too and what you think!
I went and bought the alienware m14x and it is everything I was hoping for.It runs perfectly and games are just top notch on this machine. The graphics card runs smoothly, ssd is great and I love the lighting control.
so I redid the stopwatch and I took my external hard drive out and from start it took 24seconds to load into windows and start internet explorer with the wifi connected. That is quick
It takes 14seconds to shutdown and before I installed wondows updates it took 15seconds to start but now 34seconds.Dont know why windows does this.im running windows 7 so I think windows 8 will boot much faster.Hope this was usefull
Okay cool! Not bad at all. What specs did you go for? Mine will be with windows 8 so can only have 512GB +64GB SSD which is a shame...the SSD is soo expensive though!

Hi charlaf,
We do not have any information if new Alienware models will be launched in 2013.

I opt for the 64gb + 1tb hdd. Yea the ssd are pricy but they will def make yr laptop run like a dream. Have 8 gigs ram also
