Alienware M18x R2 Pixelation on cold boot (need help)

Hi all,

I am having some issues with my M18x R2 display and I am hoping for some advice.

Recently, every time I did a cold boot up, my screen will be filled with multiple colors pixelation.

To remove the pixelation, I had to shut down the laptop, unplug the power cord, reconnect and reboot the laptop.

I tried googling for a solution but have yet to find any solution or someone with the same problem.

I tried updating my ATI driver to the latest version but it causes error halfway updating. So, I ended up using ATI catalyst 13.3 Beta 3.

So, I am hoping someone will have some ideas as to what's wrong with my display.

I have also attached 2 images below to illustrate the pixelation. Any help will be greatly appreciated! =D

My laptop specs:

Alienware M18x R2

Intel i7-3720QM

AMD 7970M Crossfire

Windows 7 Pro 64bit

Using AMD catalyst 13.3 Beta 3 (Driver: 12.100.17.0)

Display with pixelation on cold boot:

Normal display:

Thanks in advance for the help =D

Hi Ris,

Connect an external monitor and check if you get the pixilation on the screen.

Also, while booting the computer tap F2 at Alienware logo and check the status of the screen in BIOS.

Run diagnostics on LCD. Restart the computer and tap F12 during startup.

Select Diagnostics and test LCD.

Awaiting your response!

Hi Rajesh,

As I don't have an external monitor available, I was unable to perform the check.

Booting into the BIOS screen, I realised the multi-coloured pixelation appear mostly around the grey text.

However, a diagnostic run reveals no error related to the display or the GPU.

I have attached a few screenshots of the result from the diagnostic run for your reference.

Result from diagnostic:

P.S. I didn't have my battery attached during the run which caused the displayed error but I assume that's not an issue.

Pixelation appears even on diagnostic run :

So, is there anything else that I can do to get rid of the pixelation? Maybe 're-seat' the cable connecting the GPU and motherboard?

Thanks for your help Rajesh. Look forward to hear from you soon.

Regards,

Ris
