Update the synaptics touchpad driver, click here for the download.
Before you install the new driver, type on the start menu's search box "device manager" and hit enter, in the device manager, find "Mouse and other pointing devices" and if the synaptics driver is there, right click on it, uninstall it and restart the system. After that, download the driver and re install it.
I went through all that and it gave me some error about having a newer version installed despite clicking on the above link, so I uninstalled the other one and the touchpad is now working. However now the Alienware Command Centre doesn't really work for AlienTouch- it just comes up with a screen with some letters in alienware font... Mainly I just really want to be able to use the scrolling again

Take it back- it's now a recurring issue but only with certain programs ie firefox
ie the scrolling will work fine on word but not on firefox, however usually after restarting it starts working again. Frustrating.
