Aurora R3 Video Problems
I've posted this problem before but I think this warrants a new thread.
The original R3 had 2 nVidia GTS 450's in SLI config. They never worked properly...blue screens, lock ups..you name it did it. Dell/Alienware replaced both cards and still had same problems. I tried both replacement cards in my other 2 rigs and it didn't matter whether they were installed singly or in SLI config they crashed every computer within 24-48 hours.
I dumped the 2 GTS450's and installed one Gigabyte AMD 6990 in the Alienware R3 and it has been running for 3 months now 24/7 with no problems of any kind apart from fact it's been running at 89C and 81C on the two GPU's.
My 2nd rig has 2 x Gigabyte 6850 (crossfire) and has been running 24/7 for 4 weeks without a problem. I tried the GTS450's both singly and in SLI mode and surprise, surprise machine crashed in a couple of hours.
A word of warning, this card needs at least 12.5 inches clearance lengthwise plus 2 x 8 pin PSU connectors (800W PSU absolute minimum) and is going to cost you somewhere over $700 if you can find one!
I really used to love nVidia but the OEM units supplied by Dell/Alienware seem to have a major problem. My 3rd rig has an EVGA GTS450 and is completely stable. I tried the nVidia branded one it it crashed it like crazy.
If anyone wants specs on all 3 rigs I'll be haapy to give you the info

As most of my computing/gpu power is used crunching stuff like collatz conjecture, primegrid, climate prediction etc, it's interesting to note that the Gigabyte 6990 is incredibly fast. I'm seriously considering upgrading my PSU to 1250W and running 2 in crossfire mode. If you are totally insane and have a mobo/psu that can take 3 of them.......you probably won't need to run your heating this winter!
