fps drop , everywhere , even on simple things !!

Hello ,

My computer started having fps drops on every single game and I dont know why, NOTE that this "fps drop" does not happen only on gaming, but while doing much simplier things lets say right click on desktop .... ( it takes some extra seconds to show the results of right clicking ) or going back through folder navigation in windows and such...On gaming this happens even if I play everything on low settings, so settings doesn't really matter...

I removed the antivirus, defragmented hard disks , run through some tests ( chkdsk, SeaTools, alienware autopsy with no problems showing) , made a clean reinstallation of windows ,tried both nvidia drivers ( nvidia 314, and dells 306 ), i changed the nvidia settings from nvidia control panel to using only the nvidia rather than the system choosing . I even considered the tiny possibility of having "mouse" lag, unplugged the mouse , and still having fps issues .

then i tried a few steps to see if there where any difference with no result ...

Run>msconfig>Boot>Advanced Options> Check: Number of Processors> Set it max.

Start>My Computer Performance Settings> Adjust for best Perfomance

Start>My Computer Performance Settings>Advanced>Virtual memory Change..>Unchecked Automatically manage paging file..>Custom size> Put the number it recommends

Here is a video showing you the fps drop, ( you can understand when the fps happens withhearing the audio as well )

 [View:http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=Kfa_889EPro]

( from my understandings the problem occurs when the computer/nvidia/whatever  tries to load something new )

to really give you a good idea of what is happening, this fps drop occurs when something "new" is going to happen, lets say when an explosion is going to happen in call of duty , or when I use an ability in a game that needs to make some visual effects, or even on simpler things , like showing the results of right clicking on desktop and such .....

Running an alienware m17x r3

nvidia gtx 580m

16gb of ram

2860qm 2.5 ghz

I m not sure if this is the problem or if it helps anyhow but this is a sceenshot of the task manager while the fps drop happens ( http://oi46.tinypic.com/24opssg.jpg )[IMG]

please help

Try troubleshooting as just described here:

"Sounds like CPU or GPU is throttling back. Surely you are using AC Adapter the whole time, right?

Run Dell Diagnostics, ePSA, or whatever "outside of Windows" diags are supplied for your machine.

Set Power Profile to High Performance but max of 99% Processor.

Maybe even UnderClock GPU a bit.

Run CPUID HW-Monitor and document Max column after playing and benchmarking.

Remove games (their code and any possible network lagging) from equation.

- Run Heaven Benchmark, Futuremark (free ones), and OCCT (be careful with Power Supply test)."

-did all sort of diagnostics with no results

- set it to 99% with no making any differences

- i disabled the overlcoking feature with no results still getting this fps drops,  and it is EVERYWHERE not on just gaming

-strange but run the benchmarks without having fps drops

Yes, those are the steps.

Temps?

OverClocking Feature should not be on in the first place.

If benchmarks run ok, points to problem with games. OCCT (PS Test) is better to check whole machine. Heaven is only DirectX graphics.

temps were fine around 60-70

yes i get it if benchamark run ok that means the gamse are the problem but how can you justify the delay on simplier things like, right clicking on desktop (takes some extra seconds to show result) or the delay while pressing the back button while navigating in files ? (lets say you have 1 folders with two subfolders , while i m in the subfolder and i press the back button to go at the main folder, i can get a delay on "loading" and such )

on the occt was getting to no responding while on tests i dont know why, tried to reinstalled it with no results

even weirder was that i was getting the message that crysis2 has stoped working :S ...

ow and overclocking was on until i started to have fps drops , i turned it on to see if it could help with the issue, but it didnt

Works for me. Power-Supply test is an excellent system stress test (CPU and GPU concurrently). Start a virus scan first and you can even have the HDD going at the same time.

Here are some OCCT notes I made a while back.

Amps not showing for GPU and CPU like CPUID HW-Monitor 1.21.0 does (bug)?

During Full Screen GPU test, might get a constant "busy" spinning mouse cursor.

During Full Screen GPU test, might get a crash. Try non-Full Screen (windowed).

If OCCT crashes, might say it was Crysis-2. Developer is looking into this bug.

it is an online game , but i m pretty sure it is not a network lag problem, the game is called smite , and i ve set it as an example of what is happening to my machine, again, this "fps" drop happens anywhere not in just this game ....on all the games, and even on simple tasks like right clikcing on desktop (takes extra seconds to show the results)

1. Is that CPU or GPU. Due to laptops cooking themselves (look up nVidia), I'm pretty sure laptop thermal throttling is agressive now-days.

2. Could still be throttling. However, sounds more like HDD trouble or some process using up all the cpu-cycles.

Don't take this the wrong way, but while you have presented a lot of info here ... your presentation is still vague in some areas.

Here is a video showing you the fps drop,

Is this an online game? Does it have to fetch those characters from the Internet? Think it might be a network lag problem?

Yes, as I said above ... in that video it looked like it was having trouble retrieving the data (either from hard-drive or network).

It appears one of the drives in your RAID-0 pair is in error. I don't provide RAID support, but I suggest you backup your vital data ASAP.

Even when working properly, RAID (especially RAID-0) is just a problem waiting to happen. Really no need to do RAID-0 for speed these days (now that we have affordable SSDs).

If you are luckly, you only have one problem. I wouldn't hope for two.

This will have to be corrected before you can continue troubleshooting.

just to make something clear , this error occured NOW, TODAY,  i mean the fps drops started 1 month ago .....and i guess it resulted to one of the hard drives failing ( by far, i m not  a computer expert nor i have studied anything close to computers , this is just my conclusion ) .... it might be a coincedence it might be not
