Graphics card power cable issue

My PC keeps shutting down when I play games with high graphics, and the temperature of my graphics cards go up to 100 degrees when playing a game like battlefield on medium graphics...

So I searched on the internet and I found this:

http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dsn/en/document?c=us&cs=19&dl=false&l=en&s=dhs&docid=84D6A6EDA59E9719E040AC0A64E97CC4&doclang=en

My PC is the Alienware Area-51 ALX with the dual ATI HD 5970 graphics cards.
This page tells me that the cards should have this cables:
Card 1: P19 & P20
Card 2: P18 & P21

So today I checked the cables and I only saw 2 cables with numbers on it.
On the first card it's P16 and on the second card it's P18.

I guess this isn't right hmm.. What can I do about it? Should I call Dell?

Yeah, my Aurora had the same problem. They were supposed to use cables P14 and  P16, each a seperate bundle for each card. Instead, they used P14 and P15 , basically using 1 power supply for both cards, not good. This  is a common problem it apperas for Alienware. The people building these need to be trained on the proper way. Also, even worse, there were cables wedged underneath my bottom 460 card, basically jammed under its fan, probably keeping it from spinning. I fixed everything (I think) They should have made the more space in between the cards, they are literally stackon on top of each other.

I have had freeze up with my games since I got this, about a week ago. I'm hoping this will fix it. Good luck.

After having GPU replacement, I was told by the rep that ALX and non-ALX with PSU 1.2K should have the following setting.

Top-P16, P19
Bottom-P20, P24.

So far no problem what so ever. Try it and see what's up!

Thanks for the replies.

But I can't change the cables to
Top-P16, P19
Bottom-P20, P24.
Because the bottom card has a P18 cable.

Also, I only found 2 cables with numbers on them.
Could you tell me where the other 2 power cables are at the graphics cards?

And ehm, I'm not even sure I have 1.2K PSU.
Where can I check this?

Your invoice that came with your system should say what power supply you have. Mine has a 875 watt supply. I have dual NVidaa 460 graphics card, each gets 1 power supply attached to it, at the corner. I guess your ATI cards each need 2 power connectors? Wow. All I know is that my cables were all crammed underneath the video cards. I had to remove them to pull out the other power connector I needed, as it was below the lower card, in a lower area. Sorry I can't help more. Try calling Dell support, they should be able to help you more.

I finally found the numbers on the other cables.
This is the config it was set to:

Card 1: P16 & P17
Card 2: P18 & P19

It looks like I have the 1.2K version so I used the config table and set it to this:

Card 1: P19 & P20
Card 2: P18 & P21

My PC is still running at a very high temperature.. (around 75 degrees idle, and around 95 when playing games)
Nothing changed with this cable setup.

Any suggestions? D:

The fans speeds are fine, increasing when the temperature increases.

I guess it's not the fan speed, but the 2 cards are placed onto eachother with like 2 mm space between them.
And I can't move one to the other slot because the crossfire thing is way to small.

And ehm, I'll try to run it with the side cover off later, cause I don't have time to do it now lol.

Sounds like lack of air or fan speeds are to low.

Do you have your CC:ThermalControls PCIe fan set to a manual curve?

You can leave CCC running (on OverDrive/Fan tab) on second monitor while full screen gaming in main monitor. While set to Auto, do you see fan speeds increasing as they should?

If you think it's getting starved for air, seems like running it with the side cover off would be a good test to bypass that condition.

Update the VBIOS (S3C00001.104/105, A02) for ATI HD 5970 card from Dell Driver Download section.

Also, set the power cable the way I mentioned (as I was told the website one is outdated) but If the problem still persist call Dell and have the GPU replaced.

I just tried to play some games with the side cover off.
But the temperature is exactly the same as before...

So I'll try to do what you said mazx.

Indeed, it's weird that this expensive machines still have to get fixed sometimes.

But it looks like nothing is working to get the temperature down, I guess I need to call Dell.
Or does anyone have another suggestion?

Could someone please tell me what the normal temperatures are for my system? I can't find them anywhere.
I want to try some things, like moving my PC, it seems that it's in a hot corner of my room lol (didn't notice that before..)

Pull the power supply out and take a good picture of the label. This will answer all questions about the PS once-and-for-all.

Be sure to apply that VideoBIOS firmware update. I read on another board it might fix 5970 over-heat issues.

Try the cards one-at-a-time. Record temps while idle and during max. gaming. While full screen gaming ... run CCC (OverDrive screen ... but OC off) in the other monitor, and be sure card(s) are down-clocking while idle, fan and temps idle/max, etc.

During the winter, isn't the room only as warm as the thermostat setting? Maybe 75F ? If anything is heating up that corner of the room, it's likely the Area-51 itself.

I'll try to update my video stuff first.
But can you tell me how to do that?
Sorry I don't know anything about graphics cards =P
