Hard drive return Issue.
I have an Alienware Area 51 ALX. it was shiped 3/24/2010. Online order though AAFES (military store).
Part numbers from original System Configuration.
J510R
H652R
J518R
H652R
J518R
H652R
It came with a Raid 0 with 2 1TB harddrives. and I had ordered a 3rd 1TB harddrive for storage. Firmware cc38
Within a week one of the drives in the raid triggered a SMART and so the 3rd harddrive was used to replace that.
RMA the failed hardrive. replaced with a Fireware cc38. It became a spare.
I bought 3 1TB harddrives of the same model but with newer firmware. cc45
Durring troubleshooting with a video driver issue a second install of win7 was made on a 3rd drive to do driver testing.
(that broke the utility partition)
Since the utility partition was not working anymore I made a Raid 1+0 out of 4 harddrives. And rebuilt the system from the install DVDs.
about 1 month later one of the drives, firmware cc38, triggered a SMART error. I called up tech support and they said they was going to replace it.
They sent 2 harddrives firmware cc49, cc46, a utility DVD and a win7sp1 DVD.
When I called techsupport they said they wanted both of the drives replaced. (even thou only 1 drive had SMART failure).
Now almost 2 months later I got back the 2 drives I had sent with a statement that they are not dell drives and to send back dell drives.
I called the 800 number on the paper and I get bounced back to Alienware tech support. He says not to use the RMA in the box and a new RMA will be sent out to ship back. Have not got it 8 days later.
I got a call asking where the drives are and when I explaigned the background, that tech has never heard of this either.
Now I have a box with one SMART failure and one good drive just sitting here. And I owe Dell 2 Hard drives on an open RMA.
Any ideas?
