M11x - gaps between protective screen and lid shell

Reports are starting to crop up (over the past few months at least) of replacement screens having a gap between the plastic protective screen and the lid along the top edge. For some this is leading to dust contaminating the gap between the LCD panel and the protective screen. My LCD assembly was replaced late last week and the new one has such a gap, whereas the original one did not. Here's what it looks like.

These LCD assemblies are supposed to be sealed. Sealing tape is used along the sides and bottom edges to prevent this sort of thing, and this gap appears to be a defect.

More photos can be seen here.

There are other photos scattered in other threads on the M11x NBR forum as well. Again, we've been a few seeing reports of this for a while now, but I think it's always - or at least usually - when one's had their LCD assembly replaced.

Wow, that's nasty looking.  Something to watch out for when one gets the 'permanent' fix for the hinges done.

I had a bad LED screen and well im here in Iraq (Military) and I asked Dell to send me the replacement screen since I do know how to work on laptops. Its very easy to remove that cover you just need to have patience. There is a video on Youtube showing how to remove its very simple. I removed mine and installed it no problems you just need to make sure the screen cover is in properly and fully clips to the frame if not it will have gaps and not look right.

I wonder if it's possible that the lid cover (the outer shell) on some of these LCD assemblies that owners have been getting as replacements is a different part than what was originally designed. Given the fact that THIS is the part that's at the heart of the hinge failure I'm suspicious that it's either a new part or is a refurbished assembly that wasn't properly reassembled. They've just started showing up in the past 2 or 3 months and no one has ever reported them on a new M11x. Just a theory.

In any event I really don't think that removing and refitting the shell piece would work. Every other aspect of the fit on the lid lines up perfectly - you'd have to see it in person to know what I mean by that. It's as if it (or the protective screen) just wasn't made to the same specs. Preventing dust contamination once you've opened the sealed assembly is difficult to do. Owners who have had this gap for some time are saying that it will, no ifs ands or buts, lead to dust penetrating the interior pretty quickly. I'll see how it goes. It shouldn't take too long in my case since I live in a house with no carpets and dust like you wouldn't believe.
