M15x CPU fan issue

Hi, the fan on my CPU won't spin, this is leading to overheating and shutdown.

I have taken the cover off to make sure it was connected and also checked if anything was obstructing the blades but the fan spins freely.

I also downloaded speedfan to see if it was spinning intermittently and I hadn't noticed, but the program doesn't register either of the fan as being there. I also tried CPUID HWMonitor and that doesn't find any fans either.  I can only get readings for the temperature which idles at around 60.

Will I need to replace it or can it be repaired?

Greetings Ebony_Wraith,

In case you haven't already, I would reseat the cable for the fan.  If it still doesn't spin, I would recommend calling Dell support.  This is a very easy replacment, and the whole unit is held down by the 5 visible screws.  Perhaps they can simply send you the fan/heat sink assembly to try.

Thanks,

Gabe

Just a heads up i have tried ringing dell support for a similar issue I had with the fans, and they insisted they had to replace the motherboard and couldnt just do the fans/heatsink, deapite me telling them multiple times i just want a new fan. They wanted to charge me £522 for something i didnt need and would most likly not change anything. Dell support can be a complete nightmare. Understanding the forign callcenters is hard enough.

I'm still under warranty (only had the laptop 8 months) so hopefully they won't try to charge me anything.  I know there is no problem with the motherboard as yesterday I removed the GPU fan and plugged it into the CPU fan slot and during boot up the fan started spinning.  I'll phone then and see what they say.
