M17x-R3 Aero Issues
Hey all,
I saw the post about M18x users having issues with Aero and did a quick search for M17x aero issues and didn’t find anyone reporting the same issue. I am a bit surprised because both of my buddies have M17x-R3s, with almost the same specs, and have that issue.
Specs: I7 2820QMs, GTX 460m w/ 3d screen, 16gb hyper-x ram, windows 7 ultimate, A04 bios. The only difference is hard drives where one has stock Seagate hard drives in raid, the other has an intel SSD w/ 500gb WD backup drive.
Both are having the issue. Sometimes they boot up w/out Aero (a reboot usually fixes this) or out of the blue, they will lose Aero and revert back to windows basic.
We have tried multiple drivers; both are running the latest ones from NVidia (280.26). No matter what driver is used, same issue happens. Both have even tried to clean install Windows but still have the same issue.
Any of you guys w/ the M17x-R3s having the same issue? Is there a fix? Could the M18x and M17x be suffering from the same issue?

Same issue with M17XR3
i have aero issue when switching user.
also aero crashes when switching from ati to intel and vice versa. using the switchable graphics option.

Hey hi my m17x r3 just arrived with same problem i think i totally fixed the problem it only happened to me once but haven't happened ever again , this was an intentional uninstall of the alien re spawn tool. please try it. and let me know.
other problem i had was about one limitation of using 5 mm of the screen display i mean i could only use the windows till one limit of the screen, but from the top of it and half centimeter down i could only see the desktop background but could took the windows up above that. i don't know if i am explaining my self anyway ... ill be on touch. (this was apparently solved too by uninstalling alien re spawntool.

No problems so far with my M17X-R3, i7 2820, GTX 850M, 1920x1080, 2x750s in RAID 0. Is it possible some software package is forcing it out of AERO? 3D Mark Vantage moves it to basic, but when it's done AERO comes back.

I had the same problems, as you had. So I heed your advice and deinstalled Alien Respawn and it really solved most of my problems!
No more "almost lock ups" (couldn't change energy profiles, aero was gone, and couldn't even change Display brigtness), no more free space above maximized windows.
The only Problem left to me is, that aero still turns off when Firefox is running Flash/html5 videos in fullscreen and 3D is (accidentally) turned on.
Detailed behavior:
Starting a video on Youtube. 3D still turned on. Maximizing the video to fullscreen. Firefox plays the audio of the video but shows only the Framework of youtube. Hitting ESC to return to window mode. Video keeps playing now with video too. Windows shows a message like: Aero was temporary deactivated, because a program ist incompatible. Program: Plugin Container for Firefox
Fortunately aero turns on again, after firefox is closed.
IMHO it's a driver issue, because the latest driver from nVidia (v280.26) adds an explicit support for 3D on the M17xR3.

Unfortunately this one can't be installed, because the installer fails to recognize any nVidia hardware.
I hope, we get this driver from Dell soon.

A little update, after I tested some things.
I installed the 280.26 Driver from this Forum and it made huge Improvements. Even thought A06 Bios didn't recognize my AC adapter anymore firmware update to A08 fixed it.
Now only html 5 3D doesn't work and trying to do that crashes Aero. Html 5 and Flash in 2D and 3D using MS Silverlight works good. example
Well I'm fine with that and I hope it helps someone too.

Same problem here with my Alienware M17x. As mentioned HTML 5 3D crashes Aero, Power DVD crashes Aero and some other unknown reasons where Aero would just be disabled. As been found out in the M18x thread, stopping Alienware OSD solves all the problem. Disable it using "msconfig"
