M17x random shutdown while gaming

I was playing a game on my AW, and about 15 minutes in the comp shut down. I didnt think anyting of it, so i turned it back on and of course the same thing happened. I started digging to see if i could figure something out. After running a graphic card stress test on the dell support site, i figured out the graphic card was the problem, mid way through the test the computer shut down again.. A day or so later i returned to my computer and started playing the said game again, this time i started the computer while it had been turned off all day. The computer shut down again, but this time it lasted a long while longer, i figured it was because i started from a cold start. I go to turn it back on and it wouldnt come on. Comes to find out the power cord was unplugged and the battery had just died. So this got me thinking, i reran the stress test again but without the power cord plugged in, and it went all the way through. So is it the power cable or is it something on the computer, i would have to say the power cable, but from what ive read about others having the same problem is that replacing the power cable didnt help.

Anyone have any ideas?

thanks

bigred8080,

* Power the system off
* Remove the battery from the system
* Plug the AC adapter directly into the wall socket
* Plug the power cord into the AC adapter and then the system
* Power the system on
* Test a game

I did as you asked and reran the video card stress test. (the reason i didnt  test the game is because the game i did it with was a beta, but is released this tuesday.  Also note it is Simcity (2013), which i wouldnt think is a high end graphics game)  While running the stress test the laptop shutdown as it did before.

So the issue occurs on battery by itself and AC adapter by itself. So that rules out both them as the culprit. What video card is installed?

No, as stated in the first post, i can run the test off the battery alone, this only happenes when the AC adapter is plugged in.  I have the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4870 insatlled, the driver is up to date.

Then replacing the AC adapter and power cord would be next step in troubleshooting. Send me your service tag number via private message so I can look up the part numbers.
