well i had a M17x R2 with dual 5870's and honestly even running furmark (dual mode) it was rare for both gpu's to exceed 80C but it happened pending on ambient temp ofcourse. but my average temps were 45C to 70C at any given time in any game but i cleaned my fans and cooling out once a week and never used a coolign pad .. to me it sound slike whats already said and dust is in the heatsinks ...... or bad contact with the heatsinks
Thanks for the replies. Looks like I have no choice but to open her up. If I was looking for bad contact with the heat sinks, or maybe a dodgy thermal paste job, what signs would I have to look out for?
well what i did to dust out heatsinks was a reverse blow of air.... air and dust goes in one way .. well i blew it out the same way it went in... air comes out the backside well i used compressed can of air and blew from the backside in and OH man what dust would come out even after a week .if you do this make sure not to blow air to long as fan spin can happen and cause failure to fan . if you open it up the touchstrip pad is a bugger to remove so be carefull not to break the tabsand the screws from under the battery , a strip down is on these forums then after that its all cake .. pop off keboard 5 screws if i remeber correctly and all cooling in its glory is right there removing is easy a few more screws holding heatsink for cards down remove card after screws are removed then fan is under the card .... man i seen my 3 systems apart by useless techs tomany times lol .. anyway check fan for dust build up and cooling fins on heatsink.. you can remove heatsink from the card if so want and apply some artic silver its awsome only 4 screws clean old paste off and so on ..... geez i know more about these systems then the outsourced techs lol maybe i should work for dell! LOL

With temps that high, checking all the fans and heat-sinks for proper operation and cleanliness ...would be one of the first things I would try.
