I have run the PSA diagnostic and all tests passed okay.
I have also been trying to reproduce the problem more precisely and I can now cause the issue every time.
After shutting down the laptop, waiting a few seconds and then powering on again, the laptop will start the boot process, fans start up, lights come on, and contrary to my first post, the LCD screen does come on and the Alienware logo is displayed, it then powers off.
If I then press the power button again the laptop boots normally.
This happens every time the system is shutdown, not every other boot as I stated previously.
I have tried this using the AC power supply and using just battery power and it makes no difference.
I double checked all my driver versions tonight just in case and I noticed that my SAMSUNG SSD PM851 firmware revision was EXT48D0Q and that there was a newer EXT49D0Q from 11th July on the DELL website.
I figured it wouldn't hurt to try to upgrade it. So I did. At first it wouldn't let me because my firmware was set to RAID mode instead of AHCI so I changed it and then was able to run the firmware update on the SSD drive.
So far it seems to be booting normally but I'll report back in a few days if the problem re-appears.

Have you update the BIOS to the latest version?

Yes I did that a few weeks ago. It's using A13.

The issue does now seem to be resolved after updating the SSD firmware to the very latest version.

I spoke too soon. I turned on the laptop this evening and it has started powering down again and only powering up every second boot.
[:(]
Please can you advise.

Did you get this issue resolved as this has started happening to me now this past week and now the machine will not boot at all!
