P2414H, DisplayPort issues, Alienware post screen
Hi
I have a monitor issue when switching on my PC, Alienware 51R. My monitor is a P2414H. If I use DVI-D, I get the Alienware "face" as soon as I switch on the PC. If I connect using DP, I don't get a screen until the log in screen. Initially I get the report, no signal detected, going into power saver mode. I want to use the DP connection, as it gives better results but I also want to get the start up screen properly, so that if I ever need to F2 or F12 or whatever, I can see what I'm doing.
Any suggestions, please. Many thanks.
Regards,

Since the failed update, the DP to DP connection has been working perfectly, so I must conclude that, although the update failed, something was updated and now I am a happy bunny ... ta muchly Intel Corp, I think.

UPDATE:
So, one day later, it's stopped working again ... cannot see what has changed between now and then. ...
BUT on the positive side, I do now know that it is possible to correct the issue.
Just need some PC genius to work out what is needed .... please ...

UPDATE: I now know what is causing the issue. I had not thought to mention that I have a TV connected to my PC via HDMI to HDMI.
By coincidence, I now know that the day the Displayport connection to my PC worked okay, my TV was switched off at the mains and not on stand-by.
So I have a solution of sorts, in that, provided I leave my TV off at the mains, my Displayport will work perfectly.
I have tried to get my PC to recognise my monitor as the main display but it seems it does not want to do that. I have tried, display desktop on this monitor only, etc etc etc .. TV off, everything is good.
I'm a relatively happy bunny.
Cheers.

Hi Chris
Thanks for getting back tome.
OS is Windows 7 home premium edition (64 bit) service pack 1
I have an Alienware X51 R2
I updated the BIOS last week - version A07 - I had the issue before the update and after the update. I updated the BIOS due to UBS recognition issues.
Video card is GeForce GTX 645. This is also up to date.
I have spent a while researching the net and it seems that this is a common issue when using DP with Dell monitors ....... however, I have not been able to find a solution on the net.
Whilst I can use the DP without other issues, I really want to get to see the screen from when I turn on the PC, not wait until the log on screen appears.
Your help is appreciated.
Regards

The computer dictates to the monitor what signal is sent, not the other way around. The monitor can see those low post resolutions;

Do you mean the Alienware X51? What specific video card? What system bios version is installed?

Reconnect via the GTX 645 DVI to P2414H DVI. Reboot, press F2. Go to Advanced Integrated Devices. Is Primary Display set to Discrete or Auto? It should be Discrete.

Many thanks for the suggestion Chris.
Integrated Devices was set to auto. I changed that to Discrete, saved the change and exited.
I have now rebooted with the DP to DP but the monitor still only registers the DP connection, just before the log on screen appears.
Anything else you may think of would be great.
Thanks. Regards, Ash.

Ok. Going to move this to the Alienware Forum to see if we can get some thoughts from the Alienware users. I will also reach out to the Alienware team.

Is the P2414H OSD (On Screen Display) Input Source set to DisplayPort and not Auto Select?

Hi - yes the OSG Input Source is set to DP and not Auto Select.
Initially, I used Auto Select and that works great with DVI-D but still the same problem with DP.
Thanks.

Open the OSD, Energy Settings. Set Energy Smart to Off. Re-test. Is there another computer with DP out to test the monitor on?

Hi - energy smart already set to off.
Sorry, don't think I have access to another PC but I will check with family and let you know, if I do have.
Could be to do with the graphics card? Do you think I should be asking NVIDIA?
Thanks again.

I have already said that DP gives better results than DVI-D.

If you care to check other people's comments online, you will see that there is a degrade in the quality of onscreen text, between DVI and DP. I would not be wasting my time and effort for nothing. I am entitled to expect the same from a DVI connection and a DP connection. This is not an issue I have created just for the fun of it, nor for the fun (not) of replying to comments that ignore the fundamental issue.
