Replacing M17X R1 - Multiple Issues
So, I just got off the phone with Juan at Alienware/Dell tech support. That was fun, since through the entire phone call there was loud background noise and it sounded like a party was going on to the point that I could not make out what he was saying and I heard people yelling and singing to music. I literally put my iPhone up to the phone on speaker and recorded it on a voice memo so anyone that gives me issues at Dell down the road can see the type of technical support their customers receive. What kind of technical support is that? On top of it, I got Juan yesterday and earlier today and he hung up on my both times. A true test in patience for me today....I feel like one of the customers I hate when I deal with people at work, and it takes a lot for me to get to this point.
I've spent hours and hours on the phone with tech support over the past year for issues with my M17X R1. I have read a lot of forums on this and have learned that many R1 laptops are being replaced due to issues that cannot be resolved with the nVidia chipsets, the motherboard, dual nVidia cards in SLI, etc.I am not a computer whiz, but I am young, tech-savvy and am huge on reading up on things. Throughout the years I've learned a lot about computers without getting a degree in them, but my knowledge of the internal workings is limited.
Here is a list of issues I have had and continue to have:
- Freezing of my computer during gaming in World of Warcraft, Rift, CoDMW2...etc. The screen freezes and the sound freezes or repeats the last loop. This forces a restart by holding the power button.
- Freezing of my computer during web surfing or just regular usage. Forces a restart by pressing power button.
- Mouse cursor skips around the screen, and screen images clip or move around.
- Blue screen errors, forces restart.
- Color lines - computer freezes.
- nVidia driver stops responding then resets itself, then it happens again about 10 minutes later. Bear in mind that I have installed all Dell and nVidia updated drivers, as well as doing a complete driver sweep and reverting back to Dell's latest updated drivers for my configuration. Doesn't matter, problem is still present.
- At startup, the screen flickers at the log in screen. Aliensense facial recognition has stopped working now...can't fix it in Command Center.
- Aliensense works when it feels like it, even after updated software versions.
- Media control touch bar works when it feels like it, sometimes won't light up.
- Battery does not charge - this did get better after latest A07 BIOS update.
- Multiple fan replacements due to fan blades warping from excessive heat.
- BlueRay player is defective. Data lens works, BlueRay lens does not. The ysent a replacement on 4/20...but for the R3 version of my laptop...doesn't fit.
- Computer has run at full bore and gets stuck in that phase after startup, causing issues with opening programs or accessing the internet. My computer performance widget literally will show the CPU usage pinned at 100%.
- Both nVidia GE Force GTX260M Graphics cards replaced on 4/21/11 - Due to logged "hardware" issues within the computer....problem is exactly the same after replacements, telling me this goes deeper to the motherboard and overheating.
- Juan offered me a motherboard replacement which I refused, due to the clear information that has been posted on the defects in the original board. I want a new computer, not a band aid to get Dell past my warranty period and stick it to me.
I will say this much, if you take the issues away and the sketchy technical service I had today, I have enjoyed my laptop immensely when it was working "properly."I have had good technical support experiences other than Juan, like Julio, who was a stand up guy. Unisys is the company that comes to my house/job to do the replacements and they are great. I will say that Alienware puts out an effort, but this version of the M17X is doomed. It was a little "birdie" (someone very familiar with these laptops that works for the company in some fashion) that told me a lot of the R1 M17X's are being replaced.
It seems to be built well from the outside, but the little things you cannot see are what cause the major issues, so lesson learned. I am not a complainer, nor a person that has EVER has posted on a forum....and this is my first post in my life! I only did this because I saw a recommendation from another person that got a replacement M17X who backed herself up with an Alienware forum post on the issue and who her service tech was. Aside from that, maybe it will help others that have similar issues as well. Apparently some people have been promised replacements and it took forever or didn't happen without them chasing it after being promised in the first place.
System Information: M17X R1 Silver Case, Dual nVidia 260M 1GB Graphic Cards - SLI Enabled, NVidia GE Force 9400 Basic Card, Windows 7 Home, 6GB DDR3 1333mhz RAM, 256GB Samsung Solid State Drive, Intel Core 2 Duo T9800 @ 2.93mhz.
Any information on this from people that have advice or similar stories, please reply. I would love to hear your input and get more knowledge on this. I am concerned now about what replacement they will give me and I will be fighting for something that exceeds the $4,600+ price tag my laptop had. I will not settle for equal or less, that's for sure. My time is valuable and a lot of my time has been wasted playing technical analyst and sitting on the phone with Alienware.
TY :)

You need to use the USA Unresolved Issues form. In the form list how many dispatches have already been setup. Explain that you feel a system exchange is warranted. I can tell you now, a New system exchange is out of the question. They can only setup a Used system exchange.
Dell Policy Concerning Exchanges -
If the exchange is setup inside the first 21 days from the invoice date, the replacement will be New.
If the exchange is setup outside of the first 21 days from the invoice date, the replacement will be Refurbished/Used.
