Research your Intel P55 (IbexPeak) chipset and Socket H1 (LGA1156). Grab the PDF Service Manual.
In my opinion, not worth it. You will still be limited by only USB-2.0, SATA2/300, PCIe_v2.0, and no UEFI. You can only install processors that machine originally shipped with due to BIOS micro-code support.
I got a great deal on Ebay for an I7-875k processor. No bios update was needed. If you're wanting to upgrade further, you're going to need a micro-atx motherboard and a new processor. I also upgraded my ram to G.Skill ripjaw X 1866 ddr3 ram. If you're interested, I have 8 gb dual channel 1600 mhz Ram and an i7-860 I'm willing to sell
