Upgrading Alienware 14 processor

Hi everyone!

I was wondering if it is possible to upgrade my Alienware 14 from i5 - 4200m to i7- 4700MQ. If it is possible what kind of processor should i use? does it matter what socket etc? or will it be fine with this ? http://www.liontech.se/PartDetail.aspx?q=p:6710121

Really thankful for any help. best regards Keinan

Hi, the link you have is for a desktop CPU, you need a mobile CPU - That's what the MQ stands for on the end of the 4700, mobile quad.

Here's a link to a company I have dealt with before and found them a little expensive but very reliable, you can confirm with them to make sure the I've provided a link to is suitable CPU for your laptop

Your better off using the Alienware 14 manual, here's a link.

This is going to be a big job for you if you don't have much experience with computers, I strongly suggest you follow the steps to the letter in the service manual, including grounding yourself and the laptop, using the correct size tools and having everything you need prepared before you begin.

Some people will recommend IC Diamond as a thermal paste, and it is very good BUT it is also difficult to use, Artic silver 5 is good enough for your purpose and its a lot easier to use, just remember more is less - Too much thermal paste is as bad as not enough. You want about a pea sized drop in the middle of the CPU, then use a old (Clean) laminated card to spread it evenly over the entire diode (Silver bit) don't miss anywhere and don't use to much and make sure it's evenly spread.

Clean the heatsink of any old paste before you start, you can use methylated spirits and an old clean rag to remove the old paste, clean the CPU to if it looks even a little dirty, you want it as clean as you can get it, throw the rag away after your have finished, don't get Artic silver 5 on you, if you do clean it off straight away with hot water and soap. Tighten the CPU heatsink screws in order according to the numbers beside the screws

Hi Andrew!

thank you for your answer it was really helpful :D so if i buy that i could easily change the cpu? i wouldn't need to change anything else just the cpu right?

basically all i have to do is to remove the old cpu and put in the new one (and apply a little cooling paste)? i wouldn't need to change anything else like moderboard etc?. I'm kinda new at this sorry for my ignorance xD

heres a video i saw on youtube, will it be that easy?
