16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem

Occassionally when I am doing stuff on my PC (installing, or just on the Internet) I get the following error message ...

16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem
C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'close' to terminate the application.

The options I get are close or ignore.

What does this mean and what should I do about it (if anything)? I never used to get this message.

Help!

Cheers, Pete

That means you are trying to run a 16 bit program on a 32 bit OS.

Yes close it.

Cheers. Is it likely to be a virus kicking off the program? So far none of my scans have picked anything up.

It's possible, check for Adware etc too.
