The Dimension 4550 has not been tested and validated for factory installation of Windows 98/98SE operating systems. It is unlikely that BIOS revisions will be made to accomodate operating systems not installed on this system model from the factory.

It would be nice if Dell specified that it no longer will support existing software/operating system when a new BIOS is released. Since we have been able to use the previous 4550's with W98, it would be logical that the same model would perform the same way. Slip-streaming a reduced capablility without any notice does not allow the customer to rely on every computer of the same model performing the same way.  I was able to flash version A05 and solved the problem for now.

Thank you.

I have the same problem...updated the 4550 to Bios06 today (was on Bios01 and wanted to put a 160gig drive in so I was told had to get past Bios05).  Now the Nvidia card is reporting conflict.  I downloaded the Bios05 but when trying to flash it reports that the system already has a newer version and the flash will not proceed.  How can I get back to 05 from 06??

Create the floppy disk from the Dell Web site. It give you choices of hard disk or floppy disk install. Boot the floppy and follow the instructions. It does tell you the version currently installed and the version you are going to install but it allows you to do it.

Frankste...you won't have to reload windows.  Just flash back to bios A05 per the instructions above.  That's what I did and it resolved my conflict.
