well i am using firefox now but i think i found the answer....my anti virus keeps popping up and announces these needless updates and they are slowing things down.im trying to find a way to stop them...
The programs need to be updated to be effective at all.
If you don't let them update, you may as well uninstall them. There must be a setting to not notify you of updates and just install them quietly. Or set them to only update once or twice a day.
Are you on a dailup connection? These pop-ups are just a notice of an update, or are they some other message?
I use Spy Sweeper 6.1(only antispyware) and Avast Home Edition Free 4.8 (AV). They work great in my PC (see signature). First, make sure your Spy Sweeper by Webroot, I suppose, does not have the antivirus active. It is not recommended to have two AV running at the same time, so you must choose which AV to use.
Usually both update when you boot your PC the first time.
SS can be set to update every hour or every 24 hours. Go to options>Update and check the dial bottom of your choice. Also in option > Shields check show notification above system try so that SS does not pop up completely.
Avast updates every time an update is due. Can be two of them a day.
Both of them must be updated daily to be effective as Darrel said.
i hyave spysweeper WITH anti virus so i couldnt find that system tray option...these pop ups are messages to review but when i do threres nothing to review..second these messages say im protected from more theats and it slows down the computer...i may stick with only spysweeper..
SS is good. I have been using SS antispyware for at least 4 or 5 years without any infections of phishing, rootkids and such. Webroot is very reputable company with many years in the security sector, but the AV part of it is relatively new, maybe a year or so. It has not come so well in the AV reviews or the firewall test. Avast on the other hand has experience. it has been in the market for 10 years or more and has come out relatively good in all the reviews and tests, and it is free.
Sorry for my spelling. I am using FireFox, and it does not have my spelling tool yet.
I am with Darrell in this. Avast is a better AV than SS. I do not have SS with AV, only antispyware, but there should be a way to deactivate the AV part of SS. Double click SS icon in your sys (work) tray, your right bottom side of your screen (close to the time). When SS opens, look to your left side of SS. You will see Home, Sweep, Shields, Options,..Help.Click each of them and look for, first what I explained above in my last post, and second a way to deactivate the AV only. There is a big ? in the right cornner of each section that explains each part of SS. Also at your left there is the Help section with SS manual and set up. Sorry I can not tell you myself but since I do not have the AV part, I do not know how to set it up.
Did you say what kind of internet provider you have? Are you in Dial Up or Broadband.

Hello,
You may want to try using Firefox as a browser instead of Internet Explorer.
See if your sluggish web browsing speeds up.
And how are you connecting to the internet?

What antivirus program are you running?
Antivirus updates are very important. Why would you not want to allow the antivirus updates? :emotion-40:

If I had to choose between the two, I would keep Avast.

I didn't say that.
It's just that SS was created to be a spyware tool, and internet protection. The antivirus product is less robust than Avast.
And, you're welcome. Glad to help;
