Adding memory to a Dell Dimension E520
Hi all, i want to add some memory to my dimension e520. right now it has 2-256 modules in slots 1 and 2 and i want to either add 2 512 modules or a 1 gb module. My question is, if i add the 2-512 modules is it ok to put them in the matching 3 and 4 slots? If i add just a 1gb module wher would i put that one? Thanks for any replies. I hope i posted this in the right place.

Hi JackShack, please bare with me as i am pretty much a newbie. So it would be ok to add the 2- 512 modules to the empty matching 3 and 4 slots and everything should be ok and i would have the 1.5gb?

The E520 has a dual channel memory controller, but that means that the memory in the paired slots must match, not the memory in all four slots. It would be best if the new memory was not very different from the old as the computer will clock the memory at the rate of the slowest module installed, but memory in slots 3 and 4 does not need to be identical to that in slots 1 and 2.
I believe that answers your question with regard to a single 1 GB module as well. If you install only a single module the dual channel operation will be disabled and efficiency of memory access will decrease. If you are willing to live with that, you should install the memory in the lowest numbered slot available.
