AMD/Nvidia question
I posted this question 2 days ago in "what to buy/small business", but after looking over the forums, I decided this needs to posted here. I tried to move the post, but couldn't see how. I'm didn't want to cross-post, but like I said, I couldn't find how to move it. btw, today 12/2/12, I can no longer find the vostro with the AMD card, but I'd like to know anyway in case I can fnd it again. The "light computer work" is Office 2010 and Quickbooks mostly. Original question (video card part of the question):
Looking at Vostro 470 and XPS 8500 for work computer. Pretty light computer work, with the exception of a GIS program, although that will only be used once in while (NOT daily). Mainly trying to get a good build for future, as this comuter will have to last 5 years.
The Vostro I'm looking at has a AMD Radeon HD 7575 1GB GDDR5 video card, and the XPS has a Nvidia GT 620 1GB DDR3. Anyone know what the difference (performance-wise) is between those two cards? I don't know what the "G" stands for in the GDDR5, and, it is GDDR"5" vs DDR"3", does that make an appreciable difference?
Thanks, Steve

Performance of those cards BOTH is LOW. AMD systems will benefit more from RADEON HD cards than Intel Systems.
Light work is always a sign of someone that does not want to spend a lot of money. Truth is Games /High performance 3D modeling use $$$$$HIGH end$$$$ cards.
GDDR5 is Faster than GDDR3 or DDR3.
the G means designed for Graphics card memory. GDDR5 COSTS MORE Than GDDR3
Lowest I would personally go is Radeon HD7770 or Geforce 560TI.
Top of the LOW end would be in the GTX 470, 560 Ti, 560 Ti 448 Core Range $160 - $330
Radeon HD 4850 , HD 5870, HD 6950 7950M
Lower would be
GTX 260, 275, 280, 460 192-bit, 460 SE, 550 Ti, 560 SE $120 - $210
HD 4870, 5770, 4890, 5830, 6770, 6790, 7750
With NVIDIA SE stands for Slow Edition and LE stands for Lousy Edition.
High end windows Video cards for CAD and 3D Rendering etc are FIRE GL and QUADRO types.
Those cards can cost Thousands of dollars Just for the card.
GIS software encompasses a broad range of applications which involve the use
of a combination of digital maps and georeferenced data.
OpenGL version 2.0 runtime or higher is required, and Shader Model 3.0 or higher is recommended.
That means a low end card is not going to perform well if at all.
# NET Framework 3.5 SP1 must be installed prior to installing ArcGIS Desktop.
# Internet Explorer Requirement:
* ArcGIS Desktop requires a minimum installation of Microsoft Internet Explorer Version 7.0 or 8.0. If you do not have an installation of Microsoft Internet Explorer Version 7.0/8.0, you must obtain and install it prior to installing ArcGIS Desktop.
# Python Requirement for Geoprocessing:
ArcGIS Desktop geoprocessing tools require that Python 2.6.x and Numerical Python 1.3.0 are installed. If the ArcGIS Desktop setup does not find either Python 2.6.x or Numerical Python (NumPy) 1.3.0 installed on the target computer, Python 2.6.5 and Numerical Python 1.3.0 will be installed during a complete installation. You can choose a Custom installation to unselect the Python feature and avoid installing it. Additionally, if the Python setup is executed during the ArcGIS Desktop installation, you will be provided with the opportunity to choose its installation location.
