audio device not found
I have reinstalled the driver for the onboard sound card but still have no sound. After following all of the suggested solutions, I am at a loss to figure out the problem.
The hardware says the card is installed and working properly but when I go to the sound icon and click on it it says audio device not found. I uninstalled it, rebooted and the systen found it and reinstalled it. I then went to the Control Panel and clicked on the sound icon, still not found.

NOTE: New to forums, my first post anywhere - request patience.... :emotion-42:
Similar problem...No Audio Device. Mine follows a complete OS rebuild after formatting HD. Had SigmaTel audio, now "missing" in Device Manager (hidden devices shown). I'm not even sure if this is a hard/software issue. Can't download anything from useless Dell site (2+ hours)
At wits end, searching internet for hours. I'm encountering to many wacky and contradictory registy & BIOS "fixes". I'm fairly conservative and a little gunshy after catastrophic HD failure and continuing days of rebuilding. I have an Intermediate '+ knowledge (about enough to hang myself), but only basic work inside the CPU itself (change motherboard battery, add RAM, etc)
I apologize for the scattered construction of this entry. Kinda punchy aftter being up for 3 days (so far). Hoping to find some assistance with this dog before I have a stroke :emotion-43:
Thanks very much in advance for info to make some headway...

Welcome to the Dell forum, Robert.
However, even though you have a same or similar problem you should start a new thread, rather than "hijack" a current thrread for a problem.
On a reinstall the correct and required sequence is (1) Install Windows (2) Install chipset drivers (3) Install device drivers such as sound, video, ethernet, etc.
Most of the reinstall problems, like yours, is because the chipset drivers were not installed. The chipset drivers define (identify) the devices on the motherboard and normally if the chipset drivers are not installed you will not be able to install the sound drivers (the driver install will not find the sound device).
The downloads are not a problem, but DO NOT use the Dell Download manager as it is problems. If you installed the download manager, uninstall it and delete the cookies for it in Internet Explorer.
The XP Intel chipset driver is HERE
The XP SigmalTel driver is HERE

WOW - What can I say...? I know I can't thank you enough for your help. I took each step carefully on the back of the somewhat shaky reinstall in progress and, along with a new wireless USB adapter opening the doors for the "cure, the ...um...'wonderful' SOUND of Windows startup erupted from near-atrophied speakers.
I chased this bugger for 3 days straight through, always getting warmer but eluding my grasp until you replied and said do this :"HERE" and then do this: "HERE". Amazing...absolutely amazing.
Have a great Holiday season. In the meantime I'll try and learn some forum 'manners'...
Regards - :emotion-21:
