Audio question

I upgraded to a X-Fi PCI sound card. I noticed that the other audio connectors including the headphone and microphone connectors on the front panel of the PC don't work. Is this normal? is there anyway to get these connections work? Thank you in advance for your feedback.

I doubt that you will get it to work.  Dell uses a proprietary connector and in many new Dells the front panel power switch and the mic and headphone jacks are all in one cable/connector that connects to the motherboard.

In order to get those jacks you would need a split connector with the mic and headphone jack on a separate connection.  Dell's that are purchased with the optional sound cards apparently have this connection but I've seen posts by people that have tried to purchase that cable and not have any luck.

There was a cable in the box, the whole thing came with no instructions. on the cable there is a picture of headphone and microphone, It just might be what you talked about. I just have to figure out where to connect it.

Good luck, but I still doubt that you will be able to connect it, unless you are a tech and able to rewire the connectors.

SoundBlaster makes an I/O panel with the jacks on it that fits in a CD drive slot on a PC, that's probably what that cable is for.

Buckwheatos,

Scroll down to the thread in this XPS Audio forum entiled 'X-Fi Xtreme Music Sound Card and Front Panel' where you will find an extensive discussion on this topic.  I can't add anything to extensive discussion in that thread, but summarizing what finally worked for several of us:  You need to order the correct connecting cable (WJ149 I think) which has the correct connector and all will work as expected.  That is with the Xtreme Music card.  Gasparin did quite a bit of investigating to sort that out.

Thanks for the tip, great discussion. It turns out that I do have the right cable and now I think I know how to connect it.     Thanks.

Thanks to "Ty7" and "gasparin" the front panel headphone on my XPS 410 now works and I'm a happy camper.
