automatic update failed for Intel Graphics controller

My automatic updates attempted to install an update for
Dell Inc. - Video - Intel(R) 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphics Controller
But after initialization, the window says "Updates were unable to be successfully installed".  The only option I have is to close the window.  I can retry this, since the update icon reappears.  But the result is the same.  Any suggestions?

Well now this is a strange thing. I followed your suggestion to directly install the updated controller from Intel, and everything worked. I rebooted, and everything was fine, except that the icon for available updates was still there. So I clicked it, and it proceeded to install the update, successfully this time, and prompted me to reboot, which I did. Now the update icon is still down there, and attempting to install the update fails again. I guess the question is now, how do I get rid of the update icon?

Never mind. I figured out how to make it go away.

jcaristi,

Microsoft has pulled the driver. Disable automatic updates, restart the system. Then, enable automatic updates. Any change?

Worked fine, thanks for the support.

Windows Update installed updated video driver (Intel 82845G chipset) version 6.14.10.4020 last evening.  However, after reboot, only 640x480 16-colors (4-bit) mode was available -- really ugly.  Reinstalled 6.14.10.3889 (downloaded from Dell) and video was restored to 1024x768 32-bit.  I tried reinstalling 6.14.10.4020 twice more with the same result.  Also downloaded 6.14.10.4020 directly from Intel, again with the same results.

Is this a known issue with this new driver version 6.14.10.4020?

Windows Update kept wanting to update to 6.14.10.4020 but that installation failed when 6.14.10.4020 was already installed (no error code from Windows Update).

I have the same problem. Windows update continuously tells me I have this update but I can't install it. I'm wondering if not installing this update prevents other updates from being made. Also, is it possible to either diable this update or install it manually?

After installing the upgrade I was left with (2) Intel(R) 82915G/GV/910GL Express Chipsets in Device Manager. I disabled the driver in one and everything returned to normal. There are several warnings about disabling the Driver so do so at your own risk. Disabling one of the two drivers seems to work. Dell Support tells me to reinstall the driver but I'll just wait until they get the bugs out. You might also try rolling back to the previous driver.

Left click on My Computer-Select Properties-Hardware Tab-Device Manager-Expand Display Adapters. Click on the adapter and select the Driver Tab.

Chris;

I also got prompted to install the latest Dell Chipset from Automatic Update.  I did that, and after I installed it, the Automatic Update Icon was back in the tray.  I "re-installed", but this time it failed.  The Automatic Update Icon is no longer there.

I too noticed that the text was now very small.  I went into the Display Property Settings and lowered the Screen Resolution to a size that my old eyes could actually read.    I shut down the system.

The next day when I re-booted, the text was back to small fonts.... strange.  I guess I might have to live with it until a new update is available.

It's strange how Windows Automatic Update prompted me to load the "Dell video chipset...", but you are indicating to load the Intel set.  Is their a difference?   Is one better than the other?

Thanks for your support!

To stop Windows Update from installing this update, select Custom Install when running Windows Update (from the (!) System Tray icon).  Then uncheck the driver update item, and select Yes to not install this option in the future.

My update was successful & I unfortunately now have small font as well.  I can't stand it.  Is it ok to download a previous version of the driver to replace this one?

Thanks.

After attempting the fixes listed here I am still unable to have the resolution return to normal. I can uninstall one of the video adapters, but it will only work for one reboot into windows. After the reboot it installs the second video adapter again. This is really beginning to become an issue for my users in remote offices. Everything looks fine when I login to the system remotely. Any suggestions would help.

FYI... Here is the response from Intel regarding the 6.14.10.4020 driver.

What is Dell's position on this issue???  If it is in fact an incompatibility problem as described by Intel, then the 6.14.10.4020 driver should be pulled (by Dell) from Windows Update if it hasn't been already.

Thank you for contacting Intel(R) Technical Support.

As stated in the previous E-mail, while the drivers found on the Intel(R) website should work with motherboards that have Intel(R) graphics chipsets, compatibility can not be guaranteed.  Original equipment manufacturers have the freedom to modify or remove features supported by the chipset.  As a result, the drivers provided by Intel(R) may no longer be compatible and you would need to use the drivers provided by the manufacturer.  The fact that you have three identical computers with the same symptoms supports the idea that this is the cause of your issue.
