You can use it to drag and drop files, then burn them to a cdr..DO NOT use cdrw's for backup..Not very reliable..If you are looking to restore your os because of a system crash, then you need an imaging program like PowerQuest's Drive Image, or Acronis True Image 6.0, or even Symantec's Ghost..With these programs you can burn directly to your burner or to your hard drive and then burn to a cdr. The latter being the one I prefer & use..

No everyone doesn't have a backup.
If they have anything they can't afford to lose or don't want to lose they should do backups regularly..
I take lots of digital pictures which can't be replaced and I spend considerable time improving them. My MP3 collection also represents a considerable effort I wouldn't want to lose. I have Free and paid for downloaded programs that would cost money to replace or may not even be available to replace.
This is the extent of my need to back up data. I use to backup to cd's but the time and effort was considerable. I now copy critical directories to an external usb 2.0 hard drive. This takes only a few minutes and you don't have to worry about space problems. I backup several machines with the drive over a local network. The drive is powered off when not doing backups. The external drive was around $100.
Others have told you they do a complete image backup of their drive. That method would put you back 100% with the least amount of effort to recover.
Each person has to evaluate their backup needs and how much time and $$ they are willing to expend.
My son plays games and talks with friends on his computer. Backup needs zero.
