Does anyone have information to help us? Thanks very much.

0X0000008E errors are frequently related to RAM memory. Boot the PC and press F12 before XP starts to load. Follow the prompts and run the diagnostics. If you get a memory error, copy it down and contact Dell for replacement, assuming the PC is under warranty.

You could also unplug the PC from the wall outlet, open the case, and carefully re-seat the RAM modules in their slots. Take all necessary anti-static precautions while working inside the case.

Your Western Digital hard drive on the primary IDE channel passed the tests. :)
I'm assuming that the Secondary IDE Drive 0: GCR-8483B is your optical drive. It wasn't tested, possibly because there was no CD in it.

Are those the only tests you ran? What about tests on the random access memory (RAM) which may be causing that BSOD error and what about CPU tests, etc?

I will run those tomorrow. I just saw the one diagnostic area but will look for the others you mentioned.
Thanks again!

Ron,

I saw you answering similar questions so you might offer help in my case.

I have got a STOP error in my DELL computer (with WindowsXP-Pro), as quoted below. Could you help please?

Thank you very much in advance.

Regards, Mark

P.S. No hardware and software has been installed recently in this computer.

How the error appears:

Power on

=> Black background screen displays:

            Safe Mode

            Safe Mode with Networking

            Safe Mode with Command Prompt

             Last Known Good Configurations

             Start Windows Normally (Default)

(all the above have been tried and failed)

=> Display Windows-XP image (to try to start Window-XP)

=> Then, ERROR Message (in a blue background screen):

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to protect damage to your computer.

UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

If this is the first time youve seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you may need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable computers, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Setup Options, and then select Safe Mode.

Technical information:

*** STOP: 0x000000ED

(0x82F58BF0, 0xC0000006, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

==================

Action taken:

4 diagnostics lights checked: all green, OK

Dell Diagnostics test run: all pass

Boot up system and when you see the Dell logo, press F12. Use the cursor keys and got to IDE drive diagnostics. If your HDD fails, have your HDD replaced. If it passes, reboot, insert your winxp disk at your top cdrom/dvdrom drive and press F12 again and this time choose IDE CDROM device or something like that. The message "Press any key to boot from cd" would appear and press any key. On the first prompt press "R" and then it would give you recovery console. Type chkdsk /p /r and press enter. Process takes around 45 minutes depending on HDD size. After finishing type exit and press enter and reboot normally.

Hi, elan_morin,

Thanks for responding to my question. I tried what you recommended - using winxp disk to open recovery console. In the blue screen "Welcome to Setup" with options of press "R" for repair, I tried to press "R" and all other keys, there was no response at all - simply dead! I repeated this process several times, all were unsuccessful. Could you tell what I'm supposed to do? Thank you very much.   Mark

Or reboot and use a PS/2 keyboard...

Don't know if this is the issue, but if this is a USB keyboard, you may have it connected to the wrong port. Typcially only one USB port on the rear of the tower is active before XP loads the USB drivers. You may have to try them all to find the right one.
