Boot to USB

Is there going to be a BIOS upgrade to allow GX1's to be able to boot to a USB device?

adam714,

Thank you for visiting DELLTalk.

I have no information as to if or when any BIOS updates will address booting to a USB device; generally no information on BIOS updates are released until the BIOS updates themselves are posted to the Dell web site. You might want to periodically check the Dell File Library and see if any new BIOS updates are available for your system and see what changes are listed.

Most likely not. One reason, the system is a few years old and if Dell was going to add something usefull like that, they'd probably just put it in newer systems. Secondly, there are a number of different kinds of USB devices and supporting all of them in a single BIOS would be next to impossible given the limited amount of space in the flash area in the bios.

On the plus side... Most usb drives are actually IDE inside. You can remove the cover from the drive and it will probably work on your IDE controller.

I heard that BIOS version A05 for GX260 was going to include the option to boot to the USD keychain drives. I do not see the option. I have a Dell USB kyechain drive. Can anyone assist?

I have just managed to get my GX260 with A05 BIOS to boot from a Dell USB Memory Key.

I had to download a utility from www.memorykeytools.com and format the USB key.  Then according to my Dell account people you insert the key before boot and the option to use USB Boot should be available when pressing F12 (boot options) from the BIOS loading screen.

However my PC never had this option.  So I looked in the BIOS and under - Integrated Devices (Legacy Select Options), USB Emulation - it was set to Off.  I changed it to On and on the next boot when pressing F12 the USB option was available !!

Changing this option should apparently "not be necessary" but it was on my system.  I do not know if it will have other effects but so far I haven't noticed any problems.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Cuppatea. That is awesome. That is the kind of information I was looking for. I saw that option in the bios but could not get it to work. Obviously I was missing the utility to format the USB memory key. This is something that Dell should include on their website as a technote or something since they have already stopped shipping floppy disk drives on one model of their home PCs.

Thanks again Cuppatea!

I think I have followed all ythe instructions but my USB device is not showing up in the memory key utility?  Any thing else you had to do to make this work?  It is showing up in windows explorer.

Thanks

Hi, I am not try to "boot" per se from the USB drive, heres what I am trying to do, I am using a software called Astra which lists the whole specs on the computer (necessary for fast identification and for resale purposes) I need to be able to save the information from this to a USB drive and to this moment I have not been successful, I have tried to make a bootable floppy disk with USB drivers for DOS but it still wont recognise the USB port, The drive is plugged in and I have Bios A10 installed on the GX100 which has a PIII chip, I have Bios USB enabled and also the Emulation option enabled, this is driving me nuts, I just want to be able to save the info on the jump drive!

Please help.

Thanks

You CANNOT DO THIS.
Its not a feature in GXA,GXi,GX1,GX100,GX110,GX200,GX240,GX300,GX400.
Never will be.
Not going to happen.
There is no help for this. The answer is NO.
