bootable usb memory key

O.K. I give up!
I have tried many times to make a bootable out of the usb flash memory key.
I read the "how to", downloaded the bootable utility, unzipperd, installed and launched the utility to fmake the usb bootable. the utility opens and asks you to choose a drive to format and intall files. No file/drive appear in the window. What now?

Hi,

Unless the BIOS on whatever model computer you have supports booting from USB devices, you will not be able to do this.

There may be BIOS upgrades which could allow this, but again without any details of your machine I could only speculate.

Post back with some more information and some-one should be able to help.

dell 4600 2,8 mhz, 1gig ram 80gb hd
Bios A09 latest offered
bios setup to boo to usb device
64mb flash drive formatted according to article
downloaded utility to make usb bootable.
installed according to article.
utility does not show or indicate any drives to format. I'm sure it would work if it recognized the usb.
Will gladly supply another info asap.

When you plug in the memory key, is it showing up in My Computer? Someone else reported it doesn't show up when plugged into the front USB ports on the 4600.  But it does in the rear ports.

Dave,

Yes, it is recognized by the os and can be accessed in the computer explorer. That is not the problem, how do you make the flash drive bootable instead of a hand full of floppies?

I'm working on this same thing and after reading this white paper I somehow doubt system capability is a problem:

As far as I can see, someone just needs to provide some clear and consistent instructions to the rest of us home users. I'll keep trying, but they'll probably cobrand a Mustang with a bootable cigarette lighter Flash key before I figure it out. It's awfully dificult to know how to get my hands on the necessary files when 1)I'm dealing with a new system that shipped with no floppy drive, and 2)I possess no earlier (98) bootable OS cd-roms, just the Dell XP cd that was included.

In fact, my only quarrel with most of the online tech sharing I've seen, which does indeed seem to often be very thorough, is that everyone seems to assume that everyone else has been doing this for five or ten years and has a huge collection of system software going back five or ten years. Eh, I'm just grumpy.

Any suggestions?
