Broadcom Internal Network Adapter

Hello. I just recently received my new XPS 420. It has the quad core 2.4 ghz processor, 3 gb of RAM, 300 gb hard drive, 8800GT in it, and vista of course. I took it out of the box and came upon a problem immediately. It just will not connect to the internet. I had a Broadcom Internal network adapter (802.11g/b) adapter installed in it at the factory, so that I wouldn't have to have a usb adapter. I have now been on the phone and chatting with dell for about 5 hours on how to resolve this issue. I have tried disabling the ivp6 or whatever, that didn't work. I have restored it to the way it came out of the box. I have disabled the firewall, uninstalled norton, everything I could possibly think of. I had a new wireless router installed in my house today, to make sure that wasn't the problem. Still didn't work. I need some help! Please let me know if you have any suggestions. Also, I have the bluetooth/media reader in it. I don't know if that causes interference or not, just letting you know. Let me know if you need any more information. Thanks

might want to wander over to the network/internet/wireless board..lots of help there...make sure you read the red type at the top of the board...this makes the experts job a little easier as they know what you are running in your rig....

if the computer cannot connect  to the internet on ethernet it will never work on wireless
Have you checked your firewall/antivirus program.

I have tried wiring the computer straight from a phone jack with telephone cord. That didn't work. I have completely uninstalled Norton. That's not the problem. I have turned off all of Windows firewalls, everything. Any ideas??

Yes, it can see the network (it is a 2wire). However, it says something to the effect of the fact that my wireless adapter does not match the requirements of the router. Yes there is an encryption. I have checked, double checked and checked again that I have the right WEP code. I have also turned off the encryption and tried it. Maybe drivers for this Broadcom network adapter? I just called Dell (again!) and they are sending a new one overnight and I must install it tomorrow to see if that is the problem. Also, it is a Broadcom Wireless Local Area Network Card WL-138G_V2 as it says on the 2-page manual.

I have a 420 and broadcom wireless as well as a 2-wire dsl modem (sbc/att). wireless and wired both work.

1) Pretty sure I had to load 2-wire software.
2) Loaded all the latest drivers (see Dell support center).
3) Your wired connection would not hook into the phone system unless you are dial-up which is something totally different.
4) If you are cable/dsl termed "broadband" you would hook port labeled 6 (back) owners manual page 20 using an ethernet cable to cable/dsl modem or router.
5) Once connected, link integrity light will be green, orange, yellow, or off. If off, you are not physicallly connected....

I  too have a new XPS 420  with a wireless network card, I also have 3 GB ram and the Nvidia 8800 GT 512 MB video card. I had been working with technical support and could not find an answer to my problem. I read on the XPS desktop forum where someone else with the same setup as mine was having the same problems, however when he rolled the video card drivers back to standard vga, he connected to the internet without any problems, I tried it and yes, I was on the internet, full speed! However, I can't play my video games or use windows media center because I'm using the standard vga drivers. I did call tech support and stayed on the phone for over 5 hours (I even reinstalled Vista), but I still have the problem. I have gone out and bought a new network card, I haven't had the time to install it to see if it would solve my problems.

I have the exact same problem, even reinstalled the OS, then the drivers for the card. It worked fine. I installed the Nvidia drivers (8800 GT) and boom internet stopped working, hung up at acquiring network address or at best limited/no connectivity. By my reasoning and the fact that the instance I installed the Nvidia drivers, the 8800 GT and the Asus card do not work in harmony. I am trying another wireless card as soon as I get around to getting it. I'll let you know how it goes.

Final update from me... got a new card, works great.  Must be some sort of HW conflict between the two.  I did check the IRQs with the Asus card and everything appeared fine.

Strange.
