Can I upgrade the processor on my dimension e310?

I am reposting this because it seems like dell didnt like the fact that I wanted to upgrade the cpu on my dimension e310.  I came back 4 hours later to add a reply to my post and to my surpise I get a "resources cannot be found" error message from the dell forums site.  I am very dissapointed at DELL if this was the case.

So here is again:

I would like to upgrade my 2.8ghz to a 3.8ghz.  (Info here http://processorfinder.intel.com/details.aspx?sSpec=SL8PY#)

Processor Specifications:

sSpec Number: SL8PY
CPU Speed: 3.80 GHz
PCG: 04B
Bus Speed: 800 MHz
Bus/Core Ratio:
L2 Cache Size: 2 MB
L2 Cache Speed: 3.8 GHz

Package Type: LGA775
Manufacturing Technology: 90 nm
Core Stepping: R0
CPUID String: 0F4ah
Thermal Design Power:
Thermal Specification: 72.8°C
VID Voltage Range: 1.287V-1.400V

As you can see, it's the same bus speed of 800mhz, 90nm technology.  The only different is the L2 cache that goes from 1mb to 2mb.
Does anyone know if the dell board (OJC474 ) will accept the upgrade?
Thanks for the help,
Ceez

I wanted to reply to the only member that helped me out, this is for you "shesagordie" who told me that the max is 3.4ghz:

I wanted to know what did you exactly searched for cause I want to make sure that I get the exact model since there are various p4 - 3.4 ghz 775LGA processors out there.  Unfortunately I am not able to find any dimension e310 cpu upgrade post (unless they have all been deleted)

Thank you

First, you are listing the Service Tag number and that is forbidden on this forum and if a Dell moderator sees that they will delete the entire post. Edit your post and remove that before a Dell moderator catches it.

Second we know what is in an E310, you don't have to list everything.

I don't have an answer to what the E310 CPU can be upgraded to, but Dell uses custom implementations and what Intel lists as compatible with a certain chip set and/or CPU mounting (e.g. LGA775) is not always the case with Dell's.  e.g. I have an E510 and Intel lists the D960 dual core as the highest CPU that the E510's chipset will accept however with the Dell OEM/proprietary motherboard and chipset/BIOS implementation the D945 is the highest CPU that will work in the E510's (we have documented cases of users trying other CPU's and they wouldn't work).

There are E310 CPU upgrade posts but they are probably on the old Dell users forum and not accessable.

Bev, will probably repost here with the info again (if you get to the post and delete the service tag number).

A comment on CPU upgrading.  I upgraded my E510 from a D805 to a D925 dual core CPU that was slightly faster, had bigger Cache and more functions but to be honest I didn't see any difference in the PC operation or speed.  There was no difference in the 3dmark06 gaming benchmark score.

Keep this one going. I tried to upgrade my E310 to a SL7Z5 (3.6mhz 2mb cache, etc..) you can look the specs up at intel  http://processorfinder.intel.com/List.aspx?ProcFam=483

NO GO.  I would still like to know which 3.4 someone went with?  specific model numbers?  I don't want to drop another ben.

MUTO, did you find the p4 640 cpu mentioned above to be compatible with your Dell 3100? I use on of these as a backup machine for my wife and grand kids and would like to speed it up a bit.

Thanks

ceezr1997 ,

My dell 3100 E310 is the exact same model as yours. I have upgraded the memory from 1GB to 4 GB as well as having installed a new 3.0 USB card. I just thought I would tell you that after much research and a couple of foolish purchases....(Ex: Pentium D and Pentium 4 3.8 Ghz), I have come to the conclusion that the largest CPU an E310 3100 will accept is an "Intel Pentium 4 650 3.4 GHz /2M/800 Socket 775"  This is after countless hours of online research. If you want, I will repost here as soon as my new CPU arrives and let you know if it works...Good luck!

hi ceezr,

from what i see on intel your chipset supports 8gb of ram at 533mhz and the 571j cpu 3.8 1mb cache 32 bit supported. the 571 is the same but supports 64 bit which should work. as i have went from 32 too 64 bit on my pc xps 400 pentium d 960 3.6 ghz.. you have hyperthreading which is nice i dont. i say it will work from intel stand point. but if the pentium 4 650 3.4 works on the previous post it has 2mb cacheing which will perform better if it works. but remember you will be going from 86 watts too 115 watts which should be fine depending on you power supply psu. if you can get a 571 cheap on ebay try it i would..u should be fine. unless you only have 250 watt psu it could be a little close.. and by the way i went from 2.8 too 3.6 pentium d 775 socket also...4mb caching but no hyperthreading so if you have 2mb cache its like the same as 4mb. hope this helps. you should see a big difference like i did. enjoy!!!!! and load that ram up...!

WIN8 requires NX (Excecute Disable Bit) in the cpu and BIOS.

Since I see the feature is in the CMOS Setup that means you need the Right CPU

Not all Intel® Pentium® 4 with Hyper-Threading technology or Intel Celeron® D support the NX Bit or EMT64.

The Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor 640 supporting HT Technology
(2M Cache, 3.20 GHz, 800 MHz FSB) does. as well as the

Supposedly the most common CPU used in the E310 is the Pentium 4 521, which is compatible with Windows 8 64-bit. This is the CPU my Dimension 3100 (equivalent to the E310) is equipped with and it is now configured with 64-bit Windows 8 Professional.
