Can processor be upgraded?
Hi. I have a dimension 9200. Processor is: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6400 @ 2.13GHz... and
Drive Type Drive Size Total Available Space Used Space
C: NTFS 227.82Gb 163.86Gb 63.96Gb
I upgraded memory about a year ago. Everythng works great... but i'd like step up to more speed, etc. hopefully for less cost than a new machine.
My first question is can I upgrade this? If yes, what will work - and is good - and what else would I need?
Thanks for any help/suggestions.

Hi kat1503,
Dell has tested following processors on this system:
Dell does not recommend or offer processor upgrade but it is as your discretion in case you really wish to go ahead with it. Warranty per say, issues arising due to the upgrade will not be covered under warranty , however we will continue providing support for other issues and parts.
You may refer to the Service Manual for the instructions on replacing the parts. Please follow the safety guidelines.
Hope this helps. Please reply if you have any questions.

XPS 410/9200 will take up to 2.66ghz E6700 Duo and Q6700 Quad (NOT the E6750 due to 1333mhz FSB)
Bios should be updated to latest version BEFORE installing a newer CPU AND Antivirus software should be removed before trying to update the bios due to the software causing the system to hang before the bios is flashed and bricking the machine.

You can find a list of compatible processors for the Dimension 9200/XPS 410 here:
http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/desktop/f/3514/p/19354859/19782463.aspx#19782463
Prior to installing the processor, you need to check that BIOS has the latest version, 2.5.3, because with version 2.5.1, new CPU Support was added.
