cannot boot, hangs up on windows screen

just posted this in virus board:

hello, just joined.....  upon startup, my windows 98 hangs up on screen display of w98 and goes no further.  when hitting escape key, dos shows up with scan engine for virus and shows a number of channels (?) searched down to say 14 and is hanging up there.  I have bought an updated Mcafee version, and this dos screen refers to 4.050.  it will not turn on even after doing check disk and deleting the virus software in startup (in safe mode).. help, i gotta pay some bills online!

See if you can boot with nothing but the kb, mouse, and monitor connected - disconnect all externals.

If that doesn't work, boot to desktop in safe mode, go to start/run, type msconfig , and (temporarily) disable all startup items ....( I would also uncheck autoexec.bat and others in an attempt to see which is causing the lockup).

All can be turned back on if needed. What model /number system are you running?  An XPS X what?

thanks, will try, only have speakers and cable modem hooked up.... it is an xpst450, p3 with 354 ram I think.  I also defragged the hard drive and checked for viruses with mcaffee in safe mode, no results.

Try unplugging it from the network for starters.  The speakers, unless they're Altec 495s / USB, don't need to be unplugged.....

The cable connection could actually be preventing it from booting fully.  If that turned out to be the case, you could un-reinstall your modem software and even your network adapter if needed (if files/entries for either were corrupted).

I suspect some driver is hanging the machine up.  You suspected McAfee and uninstalled it, correct?

All you want to do here is narrow down the problem so you can get it resolved without wiping the hard disk unless absolutely necessary.

It's my opinion that the Resource CD diags won't be any help at this point, but that's jmo.

fixed it, thanks for the attention to another panicked home user!  not sure why but after getting on phone with Dell/India, they recommended full deletion of Mcafee.  probably had some of the old software on drive and when purchased the newer version (think I saw it is 6.0?) it must have finally conflicted with old files....  deleted it and re-installed and all smooth.  also deleted many kids games, probably not good for the old xpst450.  thanks again
