Cannot connect USB printer

I have been using a HP Deskjet 1220c printer with my new Dimension PC via a USB cable. The printer was working fine up to a couple of days ago.  Now it appears as though the USBPRINT.SYS file is not loading.

The file version is 5.1.2600.2180

The ntbtlog.txt file reports:
Did not load driver \SystemRoot\system32\DRIVERS\usbprint.sys

I did have an issue a feew days ago where my Blue Tooth keyboard and mouse stopped working (went to sleep and would not wake up) - I had to replace both the Dell BTkeyboard and Dell BTmouse with USB devices. I'm not sure if that is related.....

I am at a loss and cannot figure this one out!

Yep, tried that - even edited the registry to remove references to the printer entirely. Still no joy. I can re-install the printer driver without issue, the problem is that there is no longer a virtual USB printer port (USB001) for me to attach to.

The USBPRINT.SYS file exists, but it will not load on start-up.  :-(

Hi

Have you tried deleting and reinstalling the printer driver ?

Thanks Vince - tried that - no joy! :smileymad:

I have to admit - this 'all signing/all dancing' Dell Dimension has given me nothing but grief since I bought it!

Hi

On occasion, deleting the USB ports from Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager, then rebooting the system and letting them be re-installed during the boot process can cure some USB problems.  But it is not guaranteed to work in all situations.  Worth a try if nothing else works.

Hi

Not sure what to do now !!   Have you thought about getting a PS2 mouse and keyboard and then giving it a try again ?  The other possibility is a hardware problem with the Mobo or the Printer it self.  Can you try the printer on another computer and see what happens ?

Vince

The printer works fine when connected to my laptop via parallel cable, and I have tried another printer - still no joy - the virtual USB001 printer port does not exist, so the printer will not work.

The new Dell does not have PS2 or Parallel ports, so I am reliant on USB connectivity - it is a real bind if USB drivers are not loading correctly.
