can't program wireless mouse click-wheel

I recently purchased a Dell 4700 with XP and the Dell-brand wireless keyboard & mouse. When I go to the control panel and menu to configure the mouse settings, the menu does not contain an option to program the click-button press of the wheel. I have been in touch with Dell and they sent me replacement hardware but that is not the problem, and they don't know the answer. I would greatly appreciate some advice!

The wireless keybd/mouse was an extra $50. I expect Dell to fix the problem or send me one of those other keybds/mice, as I paid and now I want something that works. Or a $50 refund. Well see what happens.

The problem, most likely, is that Dell (like most other makers as well) only installs the basic Windows mouse driver. It does not have the capability to do much with the wheel.

First, determine what make of mouse you have - most likely is MS (Intellipoint written somewhere on bottom) or Logitech (look for their logo - like a crescent moon giving a rasperry). Then go get the appropriate driver

Val, I wish it was that simple. I'm afraid that this mouse is neither Logitech or MS, but made in Singapore for Dell and as a Dell brand. Nonetheless I tried the drivers for the other makes but that did not work. Dell tells me this mouse is plug-and-play and there are no drivers to be had. I presume that means it is built in on the ROM. Any further ideas? Thanks.

If Dell won't provide a decent driver for the mouse, then about all I can suggest is dump it and buy a proper Logitech or M$ or Belkin or.... that has decent drivers.

And spread the word - don't get the Dell wireless, take the basic keyboard and mouse with the plan to replace them. How much was the upcharge for wireless, anyway? Good Logitech combos can be found in the $50-80 range.

I have the same issue with my Dell Dimension 2400, with the dell corded two button optical wheel mouse. (Dell P/N 1161). Back of it, says made in China, but no indication if it is logitech or Microsoft or some other brand.  top is grey on the click buttons and light black elsewhere, and just days DELL.  Maybe I should take it apart?   If it were logitech or microsoft, that would be easy to download new drivers.
It seems the scroll button should be programmable, but I have no choice on the mouse properties screens to program the button. The driver update, just says insert the disk, which I have not done yet.
When I depress the scroll button , I do get a faint circle with two triangles inside, with a dot between the upper and lower triangle.  Haven't researched what this is for.  Seems like this button should be programmable, for instance to launch a new IE window, etc.  Have you had any success to date?

I just downloaded the latest Logitech Mouse Driver and installed it. Then I reconnected my Dell mouse. It allowed me to make pressing the mouse wheel become a double click. It works just the way it should. My system is a Dimension 9100 with XP Media Center Edition.

Which logitech driver? I never was able to solve my problem. I have to say that Dell was never able to tell me anything useful on this topic and I ultimately had to settle with them and buy a Logitech keyboard. Seems like the Dell hardware is ok but the software doesn't measure up. my experience with Dell was terrible and I'm not sure I would buy another product from them, although friends tell me that all the companies have terrible customer service now, so who knows.

Try this Logitech location: http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/downloads/software/US/EN,CRID=1792,contentid=5266

That is the driver I am using.

worked for Dell's basic optical 2-button corded mouse which I have running on a Latitude D810 .
Thank goodness, I was missing being able to double-click with the wheel button... that circle with the triangles scrolling thingie is a crime against humanity. : (
