Change Computer Display Input to 1920 x 1200, but it's not available
Hi,
I have a Dell UltraSharp 2408WFP. I just got a new pc. When I used the monitor on my old pc, the ratio corrected itself so that the picture didn't have a pancake or elongated effect. It was in proportion. With my new pc, it didn't auto-correct. When I try to change the screen resolution, most of them don't work. I get a message that says "change computer display input to 1920 x 1200 @ 60Hz." This resolution isn't available under Desktop > Properties > Settings > Screen Resolution. 1920 x 1440 and 1856 x 1392 are the only two that are in the 1920 range. I tried several other resolutions but they all give me the pancake effect, like a circle that's been squashed down to an oval. Is there another way to change the resolution?

Try the First button from the left (on the monitor) and check if the video input selected is the correct one (VGA/DVI). U can update the driver automatically by getting into the device manager and right click on the video driver and select update.

Hi H2 . . . thanks for replying.
Pressing the + button didn't help. I have an updated driver but I can't seem to install it. It's not an .exe. I put it on a floppy and pressed Alt+F2 at startup but it didn't work. Is there another way to do install the driver?

U can try to do an automatic adjust all u need to do is press the + button on the monitor. I'm not sure that will fix the issue but just give it a try and if that does not fix then try to update the video driver

I should have mentioned it in my first post. I have Windows XP Pro x64.
The driver that I originally tried was Update A00-00_R172933 but it wrecked havoc with my graphics. I installed it with my last pc and it worked fine. I had to do a Restore and then install all the drivers that I installed prior to the Restore Point. When I went into display properties, the highest resolution lowered to 1600x1200.
When I pressed the first button fom the left on the monitor, it says VGA. The second button says Off.
I installed the driver that you gave me but it didn't change the resolution. The graphics aer still flat and it won't go above 1600x1200 any longer.

When I had said "
I installed the driver that you gave me but it didn't change the resolution. The graphics aer still flat and it won't go above 1600x1200 any longer," I didn't mean that the driver you gave me caused the problem. After reading what I had written, it looks like that was what I was saying. I meant that the original driver that I installed caused the problem and that I still can't get the 1920x1200 resolution. I did another Restore and I changed some things and the option to set my resolution to 1920x1440 but when I chose that option, it goes down to 1600x1200 by itself, telling me I need to set the resolution to 1920x1200. I went into Device Manager this morning and Standard VGA Graphics Adapter has a yellow question mark on it. When I tried to update the driver, I receive the message that there aren't any updated drivers. I went to Microsoft and tried to get it but it won't give it to me (strange). I don't understand this.

Hello Denise Good Afternoon if u have a yellow question mark on the VGA it means there is a driver conflict or the driver is not properly installed so the logical step u can do is to uninstall the driver and ttry installing the latest driver and if that does not work then install the driver from the Dell Resource CD that would have come with the computer. About you not being able to change the resolution to 1920x1440, can u please let me know if u had a graphics card on the old computer and if ur using one on the new computer? I did find out that the Highest preset resolution is 1920x1200 at 60 Hz. but if u are using a graphics card then it can vary according to the capability of the card

Hi H2 . . . thanks again for replying.
"if u have a yellow question mark on the VGA it means there is a driver conflict or the driver is not properly installed so the logical step u can do is to uninstall the driver and ttry installing the latest driver" Actually, when I looked closer, I saw that it isn't a question mark, it's a small exclamation point that goes thru the icon. I uninstalled the driver but it didn't help. I then uninstalled the device. When the "Found New Hardware" message box opened, I tried leading it to the graphics card CD that has the driver on it but it said that no driver is on it. I just formatted this pc less than a week ago and I remember that the CD has a driver on it and I remember it had firmware on it also. I also tried the Dell CD and the same thing happened. I tried leading it to the driver that you gave me but it wouldn't accept it either (it accepted it for the monitor tho).
About you not being able to change the resolution to 1920x1440, can u please let me know if u had a graphics card on the old computer and if ur using one on the new computer? The resolution that the Dell monitor message tells me I need is 1920x1200 but, oddly enough, it doesn't make that resolution available. My old computer didn't have a graphics card. My new pc has an "ASUS EAH4650/DI/512MD2 Radeon HD 4650 512MB 128-bit GDDR2 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready Video Card."
I did find out that the Highest preset resolution is 1920x1200 at 60 Hz. but if u are using a graphics card then it can vary according to the capability of the card . . . I wouldn't mind a lower resolution but none of the resolutions that are available are in correct ratio. Each of them give me a squashed picture. I went into BIOS but there wasn't anything that I could be changed regarding graphics resolution.

I would suggest that you try the latest ATI Radeon driver for the Radeon 4650 video card (your card is manufactured by Asus, but the video chip is ATI's). The problem is almost certainly the video card and/or card and driver combination. Your monitor should be run at 1920x1200 since that is its "native" resolution. Here's a link to ATI's (oops, I should say "AMD" since they bought out ATI) driver for XP 64-bit. You need the graphics driver, the first file shown:

Hi RChris and H2 . . . I appreciate your help. It seems that the Edit that I posted earlier today didn't actually post.
Since I couldn't find the driver that I needed, or wasn't able to get what MS said I needed, I tried a driver program. It suggested that I needed "AMD_9-2_xp64_dd_ccc_enu_75975." I downloaded and installed what it permitted. Two parts of the driver gave me error messages which said that the driver installation couldn't proceed because of my os. It continued and installed ATI Catalyst Control Center and ATI Display Driver (according to Add/Remove Programs). The Control Center gives resolution choices and one of them is 1920x1200 @59Hz. I chose that one and my graphics are good now.
Thanks for your time and help with this problem. It was good to know that someone was there to help.
