Com 5 is IRQ 4 --- Com 2 should be

Trying to install a digital camera for a customer and I have run foul of the Dell Com port conflicts.

The PC on Win98, a Dimension 366/64ram. Camera is not seen. Customer has US robotics on Com 1 Com 5 has IRQ4 – which should work except that the camera will only look for Com 1~4 / IRQ2~4 (similar to all ad in peripherals).

I deleted Com 5 and installed Com 2 occupying the IRQ4 and its favourite address space. Machine wanted a reboot and it reinstalled Com 5 and stole the address from my Com 2 --- Com 2 is now out of range at IRQ9.

I see this problem or a similar one cropping up in the forum, over other peripherals such as modems, video camera etc, but I have not seen an answer. Especially as the computer reboots and changes everything back. A friend has already told my customer that Dell will not connect – I can’t believe that. My customer won’t phone Dell support – I’m sure there are many newer computer users like that – if the solution is simple (relatively) I’ll do it as we do have a lot of Dell customers and this is bound to crop up again.

Thanks.

COM2 is usually IRQ 3 & I/O Address 2F8h.
Knowledge Base should have IRQ & I/O assignments for your specific system.

Try moving the us robotics off of com1 to another com port /irq-com1 should be irq 4 and com2 should be irq 3 and allow the new equipment to use com1. I have found win modems and other devices to battle over com ports and not be a Dell issue. If the modem is a win modem then try a different type modem to free up the com port.
