Com1 driver preventing system standby

I have a Dimension 8200 running XP Home SP1, with NVIDIA GeFroce4 MX 420 video.  I made an initial upgrade of this driver a month or so ago to ver. 6.14.10.5216 10/6/03.  Since that time I have had problems with my system trying to go into standby mode.  I upgraded the driver again to 5.3.0.3 dated 11/17/03.  I still get the message indicating "device driver for Communications Port 1 (COM1) device is preventing the machine from entering standby".  What could the problem be?  The driver wizard for Windows tells me that the device driver for COM1 is up to date.

I think there is a windows update about coming out of standby, check windows update one more time and see if there is a download you missed.   If not is there any items connected to your computer?  I.E. Palm Pilot, printer, etc..

The only peripherals I have connected are a Canon S900 printer (USB), SanDisk Imagemate compact flash card reader (USB), and a Polar IR interface (USB).

Turn them all off and disconnect from the internet next time you try to go into standby.  (I'm trying to eliminate any possible peripherial that may be sending commands to the computer).  So once all those are turned off see if you can go into standby.

I unplugged the printer and the other 2 USB devices, and turned the cable modem off.  The same error message still popped up, i.e., the COM1 message.

I'm stumped.  Are you sure you have all windows updates?

I am double checking.

Although I can't be 100% sure, it seems like all this started when I updated the driver for my nvidia GeForce4 MX 420 to the 53.16 version.  I have since upgraded again to the 5303 version, but Microsoft was still telling me I had a critical update to 52.16 when I checked yesterday for updates.  I hesitate to select that update since it is an older version than what I currently have.

Will let you know when I have exhausted the possibility of missing any other updates from MS.
