Complete USB failure!

All USB ports front and back on my Dimension 9100 running XP have just failed. Im getting no power at all from them so ofc I have no mouse or keyboard to use.

When I boot up on entering windows I get pop-up's in the bottom right saying something along the lines of USB failure. So the PC seems to know they are there suggestiong they are still savable :S

Please any suggestions would be great (dont want to head for the format option just yet) ive got alot of work to do this is the last thing I needed!

Thanks,

Panic over for now. After restarting my PC numerous times trying every single port out running round screaming tearing my hair out, I came to make the post above. In the 10 mins I took to panic talk to a friend and type out the problem I returned to the PC and the mouse and keyboard are lit up and workin fine.

Im still confused. Ive no idea why this all happened but answers would be very welcome still. Ive got my fingers crossed it wont happen again!

Just guessing, but perhaps too many power-hungry peripherals all plugged in at the same time, leading to an overload on USB bus?

In that case you may need an externally powered USB hub.

I'm having the same problem.  Studio XPS 9100 w/Windows & 64bit.  The only things plugged into USB are the keyboard, mouse, and a WD external Harddrive.  The strange thing is my mouse and keyboard work fine to check bios, or run the system tests that came on the cd.  But if I let the system boot completely, the mouse & keyboard lights go out once the Windows splash screen comes on.
