Computer Starts by itself

I have a system exactly a week old. The first time I plugged it in it started by itself. Everytime we have had to unplug the system and plug it back in it starts itself. We thought it was our UPS unit, so we plugged directly into an electrical outlet to test it. It consistently starts itself each time. Tech support basically told me it is something we will have to live with. I am concerned because we have occasional power outages, we had one this past week. The computer started itself when the power came back on, it was on for who knows how long before we discovered it. Has anyone experienced this and what was the resolution?

Contrary to what that less than exemplary representative of Tech Support told you, it is most certainly NOT "something you'll have to live with." You have 30 days from the invoice date to return it if you're unhappy with it for any reason. They'll try like blazes to talk you out of it, but I sure as heck wouldn't keep one that spontaneously started up. Tell them you want it fixed, or you want to know where to return it, and do it before your 30 days are up, because then you will "have to live with it."

Good luck.

Go into your BIOS set up and change the Last Power-on State. I think you will find that it is currently set to power the computer back on after the power has been interrupted. It should be listed under the Boot heading of the BIOS set up.

Thank you, the computer is going back. This is the first Dell we have purchased and I have had to call three times in less than a week and each time I have reached a lackidasical attitude. I thought we were making an informed decision, based on high ratings for technical support and superior systems. I am unimpressed. I ordered an internal zip for my computer, they forgot to include it and when I called they questioned my decision and argued with me. That was my first experience. That left a bad taste, Dell offers it, I ordered it, I want it!
Second, it's not just the issue of the system starting by itself, the system has also shut down by itself while working a couple of times, since I posted my first message. It has also locked up to the point I had to unplug it, once I was able to shut it down after holding the power button in for at least 10 seconds.
I'm not giving up, I am going to reorder the system and try it again. Thank you once again.

Majestic is correct. This is a setting in the BIOS that needs minor tinkering.
